RYNARD Landman has rebuffed interest from Cardiff Blues, the Scarlets, England and France to sign a fresh deal with Newport Gwent Dragons through to 2019.

The influential South African lock has been a huge hit since heading to Rodney Parade from the Cheetahs in 2014, making 68 appearances and captaining the side on a number of occasions.

His exploits, and the fact that he will Welsh-qualified next season so won’t count towards the overseas quota, meant that the 30-year-old was on the radar of Welsh rivals.

But, as the Argus reported in November, the Dragons were always confident of keeping their man with the fine detail all that needed to be sorted with a contract extension.

That was completed earlier this month and the deal has now been confirmed, much to the delight of the forward.

“I can see the region going from strength to strength and that’s something I want to be part of,” said Landman.

“I am currently focussing on giving my best for the Dragons and I want to try and get the team winning consistently - we can definitely take the next step.”

He continued: “We have shown that we can win at home in all competitions by playing a good brand of rugby, so we just need to find a good balance away from Rodney Parade whilst remaining consistent.

“Cory Hill, who has just received his international honours for Wales, has demonstrated to the other great prospects we have that they can achieve from the Dragons, and we also have quality, experienced players throughout our squad who, I believe, will make the region better.”

Head coach Kingsley Jones said: “The fact he has had interest from many teams in France, England and here in Wales is credit to his performances since his arrival from South Africa.

“It also makes his decision to stay at the Dragons more significant and I am delighted he’ll be with us for the next two seasons.

“He is a very influential player for us both off and on the pitch.”
