NEWPORT RFC chairman and Dragons board member Will Godfrey hailed the efforts of all three parties to turn the Rodney Parade groundshare plan into a reality.

Weeks of talks between rugby bosses and Newport County officials ended with an agreement being signed yesterday evening.

On Wednesday it was touch-and-go whether the move would get the green light and Godfrey believes co-operation was key.

“It was always feasible but it just required a lot of organisation,” he said. “Everyone had to look after their interest and it was a challenge to make sure everything fitted together.

“There has been a lot to accommodate but there was always the will to make this happen and we have got there. That’s down to co-operation from all parties and hard work.

“It’s positive and exciting news for everyone and the city as a whole. For us it’s not so much about the rent that the groundshare will bring but the use of the bars, shop and our terrific facilities in the Bisley Stand.

“There will have to be a bit of give-and-take but we all understand that. Now we have to put together the nitty gritty.”
