CARDIFF City will have at least two Gwent youngsters in their ranks as they enter the Premier League next season.

Garndiffaith’s Gethyn Hill has joined Cwmbran youngster Theo Wharton in signing a professional contract with the Bluebirds.

Striker Hill, aged 18, has completed his two-year scholarship with the capital club and has just been offered his first pro contract as Malky Mackay’s men clinched promotion to the top division this week.

Hill was a pupil at Ysgol Bryn Onnon and started playing football at the age of six for Griffithstown.

Aged 11, he moved on to Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw and started playing for Race alongside Wharton where the pair won two league titles, the league cup and also represented Wales at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium.

He joined the Cardiff City Academy at 13 and has gone on to play for the club’s under-21 development side and been on the bench for the first team in the FA Cup this season, as well as playing for Wales up to under-19 level.

“We are over the moon at the news,” said proud dad Antony Stephens.

“I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet that he’s signed as a professional with a club that is now in the Premier League.

“It’s a dream come true for Gethyn and it means that all the time and effort I put into driving him to training three times a week has paid off in the end.”
