MONMOUTH Town have confirmed the signing of former Newport County AFC, Cheltenham Town and Swansea City striker Julian Alsop until the end of the season.

The 40-year-old 6ft 4ins striker will be in the squad for Saturday’s visit of Haverfordwest County..

Alsop played for the Exiles in the Conference South under boss Peter Beadle from 2006 to 2008, twice narrowly missing out on play-offs and appearing in two FAW Premier Cup finals.

County won the 2008 final but Alsop was released at the end of the 2007–08 season.

He is most associated with Cheltenham having made his debut for the Robins in 2000 and scoring in a 2-2 draw with Mansfield.

He eventually scored 47 goals for the club in 171 League and FA Cup appearances from 2000-2003 and 2009-2010.

Nuneaton -born Alsop also played for Swansea from 1998 to 2000, making 92 appearances and scoring 34 goals, and hit the quickest hat trick in history for Tamworth in the 1995 clash against Armitage by bagging three goals in just over a minute.

Alsop made five appearances for the England C team from 1995 to 2005, playing against Belgium, France, Norway, Croatia and Scotland and played with Monmouth striker Dan MacDonald at Carmarthen Town before temporarily hanging up his boots.

Monmouth Town boss Steve Jenkins, who knows Alsop from his County days, is confident Alsop can offer the Kingfishers something different and provide a boost for the rest of the season.

"Jules is a great character and a very experienced player," he said. "We sometimes need a different option when we’re playing against tighter defences and Jules will give us that. If we need to mix it with teams he can do that too."
