MONMOUTH Town need just a point from their final game to become Nathaniel Cars Welsh League Division One champions.

Title rivals Taffs Well could only manage a 2-2 draw at fifth-placed Goytre United on Tuesday night, which leaves them a point ahead of Monmouth having completed their 30 games.

Therefore the Kingfishers, managed by ex-Newport County AFC and Wales defender Steve Jenkins, only need a draw at Gwent rivals Cwmbran Celtic on Saturday to clinch their first ever Welsh League title.

A win over 13th-placed Celtic would definitely seal the championship but a draw would also be sufficient due to Monmouth’s superior goal difference of 43 compared to 33 for Taffs Well.

Cwmbran Celtic lost 2-1 at home to AFC Porth on Saturday and will be relegated if Tata Steel beat visiting Porth tonight and they lose to Monmouth at the weekend.

The Kingfishers have not applied for promotion to the Welsh Premier League but boss Jenkins is going for a unique double after also helping his former County boss Peter Beadle to steer Hereford United to safety in the Conference last month.

“To keep Hereford up and for Monmouth to win the league, it would be a fantastic season for me,” said the 41-year-old from Merthyr who played for Newport County from 2006 to 2009.

Meanwhile Beadle, who was Exiles boss from 2005 to 2008, is hoping to land the Hereford job on a permanent basis having kept the Bulls up.

His short time contract as caretaker manager ended at the end of April and Beadle has reverted to his role as director of youth, but his contract in that role also finishes at the end of June.

“I’ve not had a conversation with anybody yet about what the club is thinking of for next season, although they would like me and Steve Jenkins to stay,” Beadle told the Western Daily Press.

“My aim was always to get back into senior football at some point and having the chance to run the senior side was one that I thoroughly enjoyed and it has given me the buzz back again.

“Obviously if the circumstances were right for me, and I knew what direction the club was going, and I thought it was one we could do, we would love to stay."

Coach Jenkins is likely to stay as his assistant if Beadle is offered the job on a permanent basis.
