VETERAN midfielder Steve White always wanted to win a Wales cap – and now he has.

The 44-year-old, in his 28th season with Blaenavon Blues, even received the prized memento for representing his country from a football legend.

Former Chelsea defender Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris gave the father-of-two his Wales Over-40s cap at a presentation evening in Cardiff.

White made his international debut for the veterans’ team in 2012 when Northern Ireland were the visitors to Barry’s Jenner Park.

Since then he has added to his tally of appearances, including two games out in Spain against Real Mallorca where he faced ex-Real Madrid star Ivan Campo.

With the way things work at veteran level, a player needs to play at least one match in three different seasons to receive a cap.

White did just that and was understandably thrilled to get his keepsake from Harris, who is Chelsea’s all-time appearance record holder.

“I always wanted to get a Wales cap,” said White. “It would have been nice to get one when I was younger but I wasn’t quite good enough.

“I want to play more games for Wales and go on for as long as I can, and apart from my current Achilles injury I feel great – I still have that buzz.”

Trips to Northern Ireland in February and the Czech Republic next summer are now on the horizon for White, who also plays for Fairfield Veterans.

“I’ve had a brilliant season and been keeping up with the youngsters at the Blues,” he added. “I try and go to the gym every day – the boys have been telling me to slow down a bit.”
