NEWPORT County’s rising star Lee Evans could become part of the Wales U21 set-up after being named on the stand-by list for their friendly match with Iceland next month.

The virtual ever present for Newport this season is attracting interest from a host of clubs including Premier League outfits West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City as well as Championship side Wolverhampton Wan-derers.

Still only 18, Evans would be making his debut at U21 level if he gets the call and he’s the only non-league player named in the party.

“It’s a big honour for us as a club to see Lee named on the stand-by list, no doubt it’d be a great experience for him if he’s called-up,” County’s director of football Tim Harris said.

“It goes to show that if you perform, at whatever level, it’s going to make people sit up and take notice of you.

“Lee has come on so much since he’s been in the first team squad and I rate him as one of the best prospects I’ve ever seen at Newport County.”

Wales U21s are managed by Geraint Williams and he’s already made clear that he’ll search far and wide for players eligible for the Principality and he’s stayed true to his word by not ruling out the non-league scene.

Another Gwent youngster hoping to make the graduation from stand-by list to full squad is Cwmbran’s Theo Wharton.

Wharton, a midfielder, would also be making his first appearance if selected.

His father Sean is a former player and manager of the Crows (he won the WPL as a player) and the 18-year old is currently with the Cardiff City academy.
