NEWPORT County AFC have signed striker Rene Howe an 18-month contract running until the end of the 2014/15 season.

The 27-year-old was a free agent after being released by County’s League Two rivals Burton Albion by mutual consent this morning.

Howe made 19 appearances for the Brewers, scoring twice, and was an unused substitute when the Exiles were beaten 1-0 at the Pirelli Stadium on December 29.

He will take the pressure off front men Danny Crow, Conor Washington and Christian Jolley, who have scored just one goal between them since mid-November.

And Howe will also plug the gap left by injured strikers Aaron O’Connor and Chris Zebroski.

The Bedford-born player has previously turned out for Bedford Town, Kettering Town, Peterborough United and Torquay United.

He has worked with Justin Edinburgh before, during a loan spell at Rushden & Diamonds in the 2010/11 season, and has been a long-term target of the Exiles boss.

"I'm delighted to have signed Rene," said Edinburgh.

"He's someone who I've known for a long time and he will bring goals to the team."

I suspect we are at a season defining moment in County's season. A couple of defeats, some dissent in the dressing room if, O'connors comments are more than just a personal grouse, and the signing of a seemingly non- scoring goal scorer, all add up to a worrying scenario. Hope everyone keeps their nerve and pulls together for the next few games or things could rapidly deteriorate. The next three or four games will make or break County's season so is the time to stand firm and go for it lads. It's now or never methinks !!

Options will be limited in the January transfer window. JE knows Rene, knows what he can offer and can hopefully get the best out of him as he has done with other signings. The other County strikers may also reap the benefit with a different option alongside them - as they were playing better with Zebroski alongside them. Having been released by Burton 6 months into a 2 year contract Rene has a point to prove so lets hope he gives it a good go. Overall County have a strong squad with strong characters and are creating chances. Washington and Jolley have goals in them so its hard to see why they are not scoring.

Fingers crossed but 2 goals in 19 games doesn't bode well, especially if he cannot get into the Burton team anymore.
Hope he proves me wrong though.
At least he looks like he has a bit of height.

For crying out loud - some of you are seemingly writing the guy off already and he's not even played a game for us yet - take yourself to one side and have a word with yourselves. The people I've spoken to are excited by this signing and rate him as a very good player. Welcome to the County Rene - here's to a successful partnership and a promotion push. In Justin we trust (hasn't got a bad record in the transfer market has he)

i trust edinburghs judgement in the transfer market, he hasnt got a bad track record, he feels howe can do a job for the team, hence the contract and not a loan signing. good luck rene
