AN impressive 90 minutes from Newport County AFC counted for nothing after a calamitous first 90 seconds at Mansfield Town.

After individual errors cost County dearly at Morecambe on Saturday it was the same story at Field Mill as Justin Edinburgh’s men sank to a third straight defeat in League Two – though they certainly deserved at least a point here.

This time it was Ismail Yakubu and goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley who were to blame as they were caught out almost straight from the kick-off, allowing Chris Clements the softest of winners for the hosts.

Edinburgh hinted at wholesale changes to his defence after the defeat at Morecambe.

But in the event he made only one in defence and one in attack.

Kevin Feely, who dropped out at the last minute at the Globe Arena, recovered from an infected toe to replace Andrew Hughes with Yakubu and Darren Jones retained.

There was still no recall for Ryan Jackson at right wing-back with Robbie Willmott and captain Andy Sandell continuing on the flanks for the Exiles.

Up front Rene Howe made way for last season’s top scorer Chris Zebroski, who partnered Aaron O’Connor.

Zebroski had predicted that this would be more of a rugby match than a football contest and there certainly were a fair few up and unders.

It wasn’t a night for lovers of the Beautiful Game and the start was very ugly for County.

After the horrors of Saturday it was the last thing they needed and the whole sorry mess unfolded almost in slow motion.

It was like a public information film from the 1970s – how not to defend.

Yakubu got caught napping in the box by Clements, whose initial shot was well saved by Pidgeley.

But the County ‘keeper let the ball squirm from his grasp under pressure from Clements and Yakubu couldn’t stop it trickling over the line.

Clements could have had a second when Feely was beaten for pace on the left and the midfielder had far too much space to pick his spot but Pidgeley kept his shot out fairly comfortably.

Jones, who was at least partially to blame for the second goal at Morecambe on Saturday, had a busy first half and began to show the kind of form that persuaded Edinburgh to bring him back to the club this summer.

He used all his experience to cut out the danger on the deck three times in the opening stages and then did well to head clear as Matt Rhead steamed in at the far post.

The visitors responded well to the early setback, winning seven corners in the first 45 minutes and 13 in total.

The impressive Mark Byrne forced Stags ‘keeper Sascha Studer into a decent save from distance and the Swiss did brilliantly to push a hooked Zebroski effort onto a post and behind.

Studer also flung himself to his right to save a Sandell free-kick at full stretch as the Exiles came right back into the game.

The pressure continued to build after the break as County earned the first in another series of corners when a Feely shot was deflected wide just before the hour.

But, for all their dominance, the Exiles’ attacks tended to break down in the final third.

At the other end Rhead blasted a great chance wide at the far post and Clements saw his goalbound effort blocked by the excellent Jones in the box, while substitute Ollie Palmer headed off target with the goal gaping in injury time.

Edinburgh had brought on Howe for Zebroski and replaced Sandell with Jackson in an effort to force the equaliser that his side’s display deserved.

Willmott, switched to left wing-back, made a superb run to the byline but his cutback was inches away from the stretching Lee Minshull.

O’Connor, who looks sharper with every match he plays, fired millimetres wide of Studer’s post after a superb passing move.

And he was again agonisingly off target with five minutes remaining as the Exiles were made to pay for a gift at one end and their profligacy at the other.

Followed the whole game on BBC text.
No real changes Zeb for Howe. Feely back fit.
Madness with Jackson left out again.
All JE's journeymen picked again.
12 corners, 12 shots mostly off target.
Nothing to show for it again.
Really is time for JE to go. Lost the plot big time
Sounds like up and unders for 90 minutes.
Is it 4 from 28 now?

" I let David Pipe go because I have excellent cover at right back in Ryan Jackson " I remember those words spoken by our manager, and they are all in print.
What this guy has to do to get a start we will never know, he plays his heart out, gets man of the match at Reading then is warming the bench since then.
I really feel now that JE has lost the plot, time I think for something to be done about this.

afraid to say the squad is not good enough.inconsistent . and make school boy errors.

the chance to change was in the summer , that was missed . the glaring weaknesses since december 13 have not been rectified.

last seasons form is here for the new season ......... COUNTY are in for a hard long slogg this season if SWEEPING CHANGES are not made. too many conference players not up to league 2 standards.

unfortuantely you dont win football games on winning the highest number of corners

very very disappointing ......

The Argus write up seems to suggest that County were, generally speaking, up to the task but the BBC one reckoned they were "let off on numerous occasions". They can't both be right so I'd be interested to hear from supporters at the match. Who's talking out of their backside ... the BBC or the Argus?

Not suprised at Jones getting a MOM award in this game,it sounded like an arial dual from both teams, him an Yak will head it aimlessly away all day,but ask them to play football is not what they are about.
Mr Ed must be wondering what he is going to do next, well i'd start by looking in the situations vacant colum if i were him.
JE may have brought an unexpected promotion too soon, but if we go down it will set us back years, the damage has been done for JE now, even if we recover and have a mid table finish the fans wont forget this 4 wins in 27 run,its unforgivable,he's like an old boxer on the ropes with no-where to hide.
How long before Yak gets one of his mystery injuries, how long before sandel gets sent off,how long before our strikers star scoring and all this under an ever looming black cloud.
Right, let me find my old JE book, are here it is "Pleased with tonights performance, much better than the last one".
"We just need to dust ourselves down and start again"
"We shot ourselves in the foot again" blah blah blah.
We needed at least a point up there tonight and it doesnt look good for saturday.

I don't think we should be after JE so soon in to the season .---BUT ---
If he was to go, it was last May , not in the middle of August .
It is not all doom and gloom but somehow it feels that way tonight .
But how long do we wait until something positive happens , how many games with no points before someone presses the button .
There is absolutely no doubt that the majority of players we have in the squad are totally out of their depth in Div 2 .
My fear is the Conference is the most difficult to get out of . Very few teams who drop down come straight back up . It is many years since it last happened.
We loose more than 750,000 in cash from the football league .
It is nothing short of a disaster.
I think the Board needs to get hold of the entire playing and coaching staff and read them the riot act . Obviously there are no players paid by results , so everyone is sitting comfortable until next Summer.
Lets just stop being nice with each other and register massive concern.
It is not too late but we need to appreciate this is not an easy task with what we have on the field.
AP says it was impressive performance ----unfortunately another 40 impressive performances like tonight will see the executioner turn up at Rodney Parade.
Come on Swansea and Cardiff help us out . There must be some good loan players out there. Investing in a hundred thousand pounds now will save us at least half a million at the end of the season.

I wouldn't be surprised if this team starts to perform soon. They just need a couple of wins and a bit more luck. Some of the passing movements are sublime. I am sure everyone at the club knows the importance of staying up. County are not the only club with a poor start. I cannot see that sacking the manager is the right thing to do. Let's hope for a good result on Saturday against a team that must be fancying their chances! Up the County!

Ever optimistic........:)

Hear, hear, too much doom and gloom is no good for the club. Just face up to the fact that we have had a tough start to the season. It's a long road and a couple of wins behind us would be just the tonic - we'll soon turn the corner. We haven't any points I know but at the same time we have not been outplayed by any of the opposition. Up the County, get behind the boys!

Yes, there are 6 teams in a similar position to ourselves. A few good results and the confidence will come back. As I said previously, '' Remember Accrington last year, they had no league wins for 12 games''

Hope you prove to be right but at the moment we are lacking a decent defender.I'm afraid both Jones and Yak are not up to the standard of this league.Maybe an experienced loan signing will be the answer.

Changes for Saturday : Bring Jackson in at right back. Drop Sandell (play either Hughes or Wilmott there - not ideal, but no other choices). Bring Anthony back in at CB (assuming he's fit). Push Wilmott further up the pitch where he can do some damage with directness and pace. Ensure Chapman keeps his place in midfield. Give Jeffers or Parker a chance up front (or both). I also think Pidgeley needs competition for the GK position. Too early to call for Justin's head yet, but he cannot keep picking the same players week in week out. Lastlty, let's turn up and get behind both manager and players on Saturday. Amber Army.
