SWANSEA City striker James Loveridge aims to catapult himself into Garry Monk’s first team squad and earn a Wales under-21 call-up by banging in the goals for Newport County AFC.

Loveridge, who made his County debut off the bench during last week’s 1-0 defeat at Oxford United, hopes to start against York City at Rodney Parade this afternoon.

And the 6ft 2ins front man with lofty ambitions is determined to make the most of the chance of regular football during his one-month loan spell with the Exiles.

“I’ve come here to play games and get experience and hopefully get some goals and help make a name for myself and help the boys,” said the 20-year-old from Llanelli.

“Of course I’ve still got ambitions of breaking into the Swansea first team.

“Garry Monk told me to get out there and get some games and experience under your belt and then come back as a better player.

“Hopefully, I’ll do myself justice here and then get back and get in that team.

“I still have international ambitions too,” added the former Wales under-19 cap.

“I was meant to go away last month with the under-21s but was injured.

“Coming to Newport will do me well for everything. It could help me out back at Swansea, or other clubs or international.

“It could start my career off so it’s another step for me and I’m determined to make it count.”

Loveridge is looking forward to playing at Rodney Parade having enjoyed a week of training with his new teammates and one familiar face – defender Scott Tancock, also on loan from the Swans.

“It has helped Scott being here because he already knew everyone and knew their names by the time that I got here,” said Loveridge.

“It has been good having someone else here from Swansea as well, coming back with me to keep me company as well.

“And it’s only an hour down the road so it’s easy for me to just pop home and visit the parents.”

“I’m looking forward to playing at home,” he added. “Tanky said it’s a good little stadium at home so hopefully I get a start and we can get a win.”

Loveridge also says he would be happy to stay with Justin Edinburgh’s men beyond the end of the month if things go well.

“I’ve been injured pre-season but I’ve got pace to get in behind and if I get a chance I’ll take it,” he said.

“I’m one of those players who likes getting at the defenders, getting in behind and scoring goals.

“If it’s an option I’d be happy to stay if the loan goes well.

“We’ll see how I do and if I do well I’ll see what my options are but it seems a good club so I’d love to stay.”
