NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh has called on the club’s ‘missing’ fans to turn up and roar the team on to a fifth straight home win on Saturday.

County sealed a third successive League Two victory and a fourth on the bounce at home with a 1-0 success against Southend United at Rodney Parade on Tuesday night.

But Edinburgh was disappointed that only 2,558 fans were there to see it – compared to 3,634 on the opening day of the season.

“I think as a team we can’t do any more; we’ve had one defeat in 11 games,” said the Exiles boss.

“I don’t understand how we can have 3,600 for the first home game and now we’re getting 2,500.

“I don’t know where those 1,100 floating people have gone. It amazes me but it is what it is.

“The fans who were here got behind the team from start to finish and they’re the ones who are reaping the rewards because they’ve see their team pick up three points again.”

The club is running a special offer for Saturday’s home clash with Accrington Stanley with tickets for the north terrace available for only £10.

Like his manager, defender Darren Jones would love to see more fans at the game.

“Hopefully there will be more fans to cheer us on this Saturday,” said Jones after the win over Southend.

“I know it was a cold night and it was windy and there were games on TV but the more fans that get behind us the better.

“It just shows that when the Joe Day saved the penalty the fans got right behind us; they lifted us and we went and scored.

“So if we can get a few more fans behind us it will help massively.”

Edinburgh saw defender Scott Tancock and goal scorer Mark Byrne added to his lengthy injury list during the match on Tuesday and he may look to bring in another player on loan before Saturday.

“We could do with ten or 11 in but we’ll see,” said the manager.

“I’ll have to assess one or two situations and see where we go from there.

“Scott took a blow to the ribs and tried to carry on, which shows the character of the boy. He was struggling to catch his breath so we had to take him off.

“His loan is finished now so we have a lot of things to ponder over the next few days.”

Ryan Jackson and Adam Chapman are close to a return but Edinburgh will not rush them back.

“It is just horrendous at the moment,” he said. “I thought last year was bad enough but it’s just about trying to get people back as quickly as possible but without rushing them and risking them breaking down.

“It would be so easy to put pressure on the medical team to get them back but you have to look long term and make sure we do right by the player and that when they do come back they stay back.”
