GOALKEEPER Joe Day says he’d be open to making his move to Newport County AFC a permanent one after a string of match-winning performances.

The 24-year-old is currently on loan from Peterborough United and has made a huge impact since his arrival in late August.

Since taking over from regular number one Lenny Pidgeley for the 1-0 victory at Portsmouth on August 30, Day has only been on the losing side once in ten league games.

And he was the hero once again with a stunning penalty save during Tuesday night’s 1-0 win over Southend United at Rodney Parade.

Day’s 93-day emergency loan runs out after the trip to Carlisle United on November 29 and he will then return to London Road.

But Exiles boss Justin Edinburgh is desperate to retain his services and Day is also keen to remain at Rodney Parade.

Asked if he would you like to stay, the Posh stopper said: “I’m really enjoying playing here, thoroughly enjoying it, and it’s all going really well so that would be great.

“I’ve not played too many games over the past few years and it’s been a frustrating time for me being on the bench at Peterborough.

“It’s just nice to be playing games now and I’m really enjoying that.”

County defender Darren Jones admits he’ll be surprised if the club can keep hold of Day, however.

“He’s unbelievable,” said Jones. “I can’t believe Peterborough have let him out on loan and I’d be shocked if they let him stay permanently.

“He’s far too good for this level. He’s fantastic and we’ve got so much confidence as a back three with him behind us.

“The penalty save just highlights what he’s actually done for us since he’s been here.”

Modest Day paid tribute to goalkeeping coach Ryan Mackerness for the save from Myles Weston.

“Luckily the goalkeeping coach does his homework on the opposition players’ penalties so I already knew where he’d gone with his last few penalties,” said Day.

“I tried to get into the player’s head a bit and luckily the homework paid off.

“In this league I think if you can stay in the game you always get a chance and Mark Byrne took his chance very well.

“We’re full of confidence now,” he added. “It was a difficult night for football and we didn’t play at our best but we got another win.

“Results are going our way and the confidence is building now.

“Hopefully we can take that into Saturday and get another three points.”
