NEWPORT County AFC are going ahead with their appeal against the red card shown to Aaron O’Connor on Saturday.

The striker opened the scoring in the 2-0 win over Stevenage at Rodney Parade but was sent off in stoppage time at the end of the game for kicking out at visiting defender Dean Wells.

If the red card stands O’Connor will miss the trip to his former club Luton Town as well as the Boxing Day clash with Plymouth Argyle and the away game at Cheltenham Town on December 28.

But County believe that referee Brendan Malone was wrong to dismiss O’Connor and are confident that an appeal will lead to the decision being overturned.

The Exiles, who suffered a power cut this morning, submitted their intention to appeal to the Football League by today's 1pm deadline.

They now have to submit video evidence to support their appeal by 1pm tomorrow and expect to hear if they have been successful by Thursday.

Manager Justin Edinburgh said after the game: “Obviously the gloss was taken off the result by the red card at the end but having viewed it now we are certainly going to appeal that one.

“I certainly don’t feel that it was a red card and it’s just left us a bit disappointed at the end.

“There was nothing in the challenge. It wasn’t a big swing, he clipped him and I’m not sure the referee’s angle was great.

"It was a competitive game but it was fair and that’s what disappointed me more than anything with the sending off.

"Up until then I felt the referee had allowed a lot of good challenges and a lot of physical contact but there was never a red card needed.

“I have confidence that it will be rescinded.”

Meanwhile, defender Andrew Hughes is set to have a scan on his knee injury by Wednesday at the latest.
