NEWPORT County caretaker boss Jimmy Dack admits the club are still targeting promotion this term, but admits he’s happy simply to have got the club back to winning ways.

The Exiles roared back to form on Saturday thanks to Yan Klukowski’s double, giving them an unexpected victory at Adams Park against promotion chasing Wycombe.

“It was great to get my first win as manager, when the final whistle went on Saturday I was unbelievably happy,” he said.

“It was nice to get the first win and it’s a buzz, winning, you always want more.

“Winning is a fantastic thing and the adrenalin is great you can’t buy it.

“But I didn’t enjoy it long enough, it’s different when you are the manager, straight away you’re thinking about your team for next weekend.

“That’s the difference being the boss and the number two, normally I’d enjoy my weekend, but by the time I woke up Sunday morning, it was all about the next game.

“But the win helps to draw a line on what’s happened, it’s time to move on and these boys have put us in a great position this season.”

And Dack admits he still believes in the promotion dream, especially as so many of his squad have been promoted before, from the Conference.

Dack "Getting out of the Conference was a massive achievement especially when you consider only two clubs go up," he said.

"It would be a massive achievement getting out of League Two because it's such a tough league. For us to get into the playoffs would be an unbelievable achievement.

"Especially when you look at clubs like Portsmouth, we could name a dozen that should be (doing) better than where they are now in the division.

“And we have the players for it. I think there's players that go through their careers and just play in teams and don't achieve a lot, then there's players that achieve and we have several in the group.

Dack "It's a different mentality. You've got to be strong, it takes a different kind of player to win things.

"And these boys have proved it because they got out of the Conference which is an unbelievably tough league.

"And we've got players in here who've done it two or three times. It's a big ask, but they're winners and that makes us have belief.

“I am not setting any public goals, but we have a target within this group and within the group we know what we want to do. I would be a fool to say we don’t want to take this club into League One.”
