TROUBLED striker Chris Zebroski could start for Newport County AFC against his former club Plymouth Argyle after an impressive cameo in midweek.

Zebroski, who has struggled with alcoholism for years, was in court last week charged with attempted robbery and assault.

The 28-year-old appeared at Swindon Magistrates' Court on March 11 and was bailed on condition he does not enter Swindon until his next hearing on April 17 and that he does not enter any licensed premises.

Zebroski is also sue to appear at Swindon Crown Court later this month for sentencing following a road rage incident but County have vowed to support the front man, who was the club’s leading scorer last season.

He received a rousing reception from the Rodney Parade crowd when he replaced Shaun Jeffers during Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Luton Town.

And he could be in line to start alongside Aaron O’Connor tomorrow at Plymouth – the club he left under a cloud back in 2006 following a fight with then captain Paul Wotton.

“The club have made a statement that we’re going to support him until his court case and that’s what we’ve got to do,” said Exiles boss Jimmy Dack.

“In and around the football club Chris has never ever been a problem and it surprises me what I hear has gone on.

“In and around the football club he has been a model professional and I can only go by that.

“We’re going to support him and that’s what we’ll do until he’s found guilty.

“Zeb is always fit and that’s one thing he’ll always be,” he added.

“We’ve just got keep him focused on the job in hand and he’ll always give you his all. That’s what he does.”

Fellow striker O’Connor also offered his support to Zebroski and said the player appreciated the fans’ support on Tuesday.

“You know what you’re going to get from Zeb. He always works hard for the team,” said O’Connor.

“He’s at the stage now where he needs to be around the boys.

“It’s no secret that when he’s away he finds it hard so we need to get him back around the group and get him on the pitch as much as possible.

“He knows he’s got a long hard road ahead but the reception he got will help him a lot.

“He appreciated it as well. He said in the dressing room how pleased he was and the players all thought that was a nice touch from the fans.”
