NEWPORT County chairman Les Scadding today delivers the news all Exiles fans want to hear, his commitment to the club is as strong as ever.

The Euro Millions winner, who scooped £45 million, now bases himself primarily in Barbados and has made clear he no longer intends to supplement County’s budget with his fortune.

However, Scadding has no intention of walking away from the Exiles.

I am still committed to this club. I am the main shareholder and the chairman and nothing has changed, other than me saying I won’t financially prop up the wage bill,” he said.

“If anything is going to change in the future, I won’t do it quietly, if the club is going to be run in a different way, or if someone else is going to come in, yourselves (the media) and the supporters would be the first to know.

“At this present time, we are more concerned about getting the infrastructure right off the pitch and growing the club and yes, I am still financially there. And I am still the chairman.

“We are moving in the right direction and I’m still 100% behind the club.

“I am not going to help build something up for three years and tear it down. We’ve had a few jumping ship, but I am not that sort of guy.

“If I am leaving, if I am going to go, the first thing I will do is ensure I leave the right way and that everything will be in place for the club to grow and push on. It’ll be left as it should be.

“I couldn’t ever walk away otherwise. The fans would put me in concrete shoes and I’d end up at the bottom of the River Usk!

“I’ve been here since the days at the bottom of the Conference, I have plenty of pride in having the chance here at Newport.”

Scadding feels he owes the city of Newport.

“Everyone knows my bit of luck gave me a chance to do things I’d have never been able to do otherwise and the reason for taking Newport on was giving something back, saying thank you to the place that was so good to me before I had my luck on the lottery,” he explained.

“I think I’ve been honest from day one, I said I wouldn’t be a sugar daddy and I never have been. I said I would do what I could to help and that is as true today as it was when I walked in the door.

“Wembley and promotion was a dream come true and hopefully it can carry on after three great years in my life.

“The club has to stand on its own two feet, but it has got in my blood. I couldn’t ever just jump ship. We’ve got to be a bit careful about things, but people are wide of the mark if they think I’ve lost interest.”

And Scadding admits County have taken second fiddle in his life this campaign.

“Being away so much isn’t just because I am lucky enough I can be, it is a lifestyle thing as well, because my health hasn’t been as great as it could have been,” he said.

“But I always know exactly what is happening, I talk to Howard nearly every day, I listen to the commentary of every single game, I watch most of the games and I’m kept abreast with emails and everything else as if I was here.

“Health issues are the main concern, I needed to be away and focus on my way of life and being as healthy as I can be. My health is as important to me as Newport.

“But I can only reiterate, I am not a jump ship guy. If someone else can take the club on, I’ll step aside, but only if everything is right for the club. Otherwise I’m not going anywhere.”
