CAPTAIN Darren Jones has won the readers’ vote to be named the South Wales Argus Newport County AFC player of the year – but he may well have played his last game for the club.

After seeing 13 teammates leave Rodney Parade this week, as well as coaches Ryan Mackerness and Tony James, Jones could yet follow them through the exit door.

The 31-year-old defender, who took over the captaincy from Andy Sandell during the 2014/15 campaign, enjoyed a successful first season back at his hometown club.

Having left the Exiles initially in 2005, Jones spent a decade away at Forest Green Rovers, Hereford United, Aldershot Town, Shrewsbury Town and AFC Wimbledon, before returning home last summer.

Jones was a big hit with the County faithful thanks to a series of inspirational displays at the back and some stunning goals at the other end.

He is one of four players to be offered a contract by new manager Terry Butcher, along with Andrew Hughes, Ryan Jackson and Adam Chapman.

Hughes is still recovering from a serious knee injury and is expected to sign but Chapman has already rejected a new deal and Jackson and Jones are yet to decide.

“I’ve been offered a contract and I’m considering it,” said Jones, who is also weighing up offers from other clubs.

“It’s a tough decision because I’ve got to do what is right for my family.”

Jones is happy to win the Argus readers’ poll but was less pleased to see so many players axed this week.

“I’d like to thank the readers of the Argus for voting for me – it means a lot to win this award,” he said.

“It’s been a good season for me and for the team, even though we couldn’t quite finish the job and get into the play-offs.

“It’s just a shame that so many of the players have left this week.

“You’d normally like to keep at least eight or nine players together, especially with the season we’ve just had.

“If we’d just added four or five we could have progressed but when you release every single player you have to get in 15 players this summer.

“It will be tough because nobody will know each other.

“If you can get off to a good start then you’re OK but it is going to be difficult and it will bring a lot of pressure.”

Jones could reveal his future plans before the end of the week with his former employers Forest Green Rovers understood to be keen if he decides to move on.
