CWMBRAN’S Danny Gabbidon says he would not rule out a move to Newport County AFC as he looks to prolong his playing career.

The Wales international defender was released by Cardiff City last month after making just two appearances last season.

Gabbidon also enjoyed a brief spell as co-caretaker manager with Scott Young after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left the Bluebirds.

But the 35-year-old insists he wants to play on for as long as possible and says he would consider a move to the Exiles.

“There have been some rumours about me going to Newport, but I think it is no more than coincidence” said Gabbidon, who won the last of his 49 Wales caps last year.

“I’m a local lad and I’ve left Cardiff, so people have put two and two together.

“But, football is crazy. You never know what can happen, so we will see what happens with myself over the next few weeks.”

“I still want to carry on playing. I feel I still have something to offer to someone,” he added.

“I didn’t play much at Cardiff last season, so I’ve been kept pretty fresh for at least another season. I’m looking to carry on playing.

“If it doesn’t happen, then maybe I’ll have to move on to something else.

“But at the moment, I still I can play and hopefully there is something out there for me and I can do a job for someone.”

Gabbidon believes new County manager Terry Butcher will be a big success at Rodney Parade.

“I think it’s a good appointment,” he said. “He’s an experienced manager to bring in at a good time.

“Newport have done well over the last few seasons, but just fell away a bit at the end of the last campaign. They looked like they were going to make the play-offs at one stage.

“So, bringing in an experienced manager is good for them. A lot of players have left, so they need experience in the manager – someone who knows players and who can bring new players in quickly to replace the ones who have left.

“Hopefully, Terry can do a good job and push them on a little bit further than they reached last season.”

And Gabbidon is certain that the Exiles will not be lacking in commitment next season.

“I remember Terry bleeding when he was playing for England!” he said. “Obviously, he was a brilliant centre-half who was one of those kind of old-school centre-backs.

“I always remember him playing for England as one of those guys who would put his body on the line for his country.

“I am sure he will be expecting that kind of commitment from his players at Newport. I am also sure he will do a good job.”
