THE Newport County AFC Supporters Trust has welcomed the support of former chairman Les Scadding as they continue to work towards a fans' takeover of the club.

The proposed takeover is still at a relatively early stage and more details will be revealed in a public meeting on Friday.

In a statement the Trust said: "Newport County Supporters Trust Board has been working closely with majority shareholder and owner of the club, Les Scadding over recent weeks.

"Both parties have been working hard to achieve a common goal with Les's desire to help the Trust gain ownership, as he believes this is in the best interests of the club.

"He is keen to leave a legacy that builds upon his significant financial investment and recent success of returning to the football league.

"To move towards this position Les has agreed, with immediate effect, that the supporters trust will act as his nominated representative(s) on the Newport County AFC board whilst the trust continue to examine the interest in, and viability of, transferring the controlling shareholding to the supporters trust."

A spokesperson for the trust said:"The Supporters Trust Board are extremely grateful for Les’s continued support.

"This is an excellent opportunity for the supporters to own the club and to this end we would urge supporters to come along to the meeting on Friday at The Riverfront Theatre at 7pm to listen to the proposals and plans for the future of our club, as without the support of all our fans this opportunity will be difficult to achieve."

Scadding said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my association with Newport County AFC and what has been achieved so far.

"It has been a fantastic journey which I am proud to have been a part of, but I want that to grow and continue, which is why I am supporting the ambitions of the supporters Trust and in turn the fans.

"I would therefore ask the people of Newport to do likewise, please come along to the meeting to show and offer your support to your club and secure the future of your dlub."

The Trust takeover is still subject to the approval of the Football League.
