TOP scorer Scott Boden says the players want to give the Newport County AFC fans something to shout about at Rodney Parade with some home wins this month.

County have won only one league game at home all season – the 3-0 victory over Luton Town in November – and only two in the last 12 months.

In contrast, the Exiles have picked up five wins on the road in League Two so far this season – the latest a 2-1 success at Morecambe at the weekend.

They have a chance to readdress the balance this month as they host Barnet on Saturday, Carlisle United on February 13 and Mansfield Town on February 27.

“I don’t know why we haven’t got the wins at home,” said Boden, who scored both goals at Morecambe to take his tally to 10 for the campaign.

“We’ve done well away from home and we need to give the home fans something to shout about and get behind us for the last few months of the season.

“The fans that made the long journey [to Morecambe] and stood in the cold and clapped us off at the end are a credit to the club,” he added.

“We go again next week and hopefully we can get more points on the board.”

Boden says the victory at the Globe Arena showed the character of the side.

“I don’t know whether it was a good performance in as much as we played good football but I think we showed a lot of character and showed what we’re made of,” said the 26-year-old.

“I think we’ve got character in abundance. If you’re around the lads for an hour you’ll know what the spirit is like.

“Even when they came back to 1-1 I was always confident that if we got another chance we’d take it.”

With competition for starting places up front from new signings Conor Wilkinson, Deane Smalley and John-Christophe Ayina, Boden knows he has to keep scoring to stay in the team.

“It’s nice – I’m up to 10 now so I’m approaching the target that I set myself,” he said.

“The first one kind of just wriggled through everyone and I was Johnny on the spot.

“The second one – without the service you don’t get anything.

“Maybe in the past few games we’ve just lacked that little ball in the final third.

“But when someone puts it on a plate for you like that it’s quite simple.

“Of course it’s important I get goals but as long as we’re winning games and we get to safety I’m not too bothered who scores – I think everyone in the dressing room will tell you that.

“[Goalkeeper] Mitchell [Beeney] can ping one in for all we care really – as long as we’re winning games and getting points on the board that’s the main thing.”
