MIDFIELDER Yan Klukowski says he is disappointed and frustrated but not surprised that he was not offered a new contract to stay at Newport County AFC.

The 29-year-old was one of eight players released by the club today, along with Scott Barrow, Matt Partridge, Seth Nana-Twumasi, Rhys Taylor, Joe Green, Nathan Ralph and Dean Morgan.

It brings to an end two years at the club for Klukowski, who was signed by Justin Edinburgh in May 2014.

The former Forest Green Rovers man scored eight goals in 46 starts for the Exiles, making 74 appearances in total.

He made 19 starts this season and 33 appearances in total, scoring twice, as County finished 22nd in League Two.

And Klukowski, who missed the end of the campaign with a knee injury, admits he was not surprised that manager Warren Feeney opted not to keep him at the club.

But he also revealed his belief that he was not given a chance to show the fans what he can do in his natural position – as an attacking central midfield player.

He told the Argus: "I’m very disappointed but I kind of saw it coming, if I am honest.

“I felt 50/50 about a new contract, due to the fact that I hadn't played many games towards the back end of the season so I knew it could go either way.

“I leave knowing that when played in my position I scored goals and played well in League Two and that is my frustration.

“I think the fans would have seen a different player if given the opportunity more regularly.”

Klukowski said in November last year: “I haven’t had the chance too much in a County shirt.

“The big run I can remember was under Justin Edinburgh from late October to early November (2014), I scored four in seven games. That was the biggest run I had.

“Sometimes when you are versatile, you suffer because of that and we got injuries in the full back areas and I was then asked to play wing back.”

Reflecting on his time at the club, Klukowski thanked former boss Edinburgh for giving the chance to play in the Football League.

He concluded: “I would like to thank everybody at Newport County for their support throughout my time at the club, in particular Justin Edinburgh and his staff for giving me the opportunity to play League football, an experience I hope continues.

“I wish the club every success in the future."

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Taylor posted on Twitter: “Disappointing I was never given a chance but hopefully I showed people what I was about in the two games I did play. Best of luck next season.”
