CHRIS Coleman says he would have been foolish to walk away from a Wales squad that still has so much more to achieve.

Coleman has agreed a two-year extension to his current contract on the eve of Euro 2016 – the nation’s first major tournament since 1958.

And he believes Wales can make history again by qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

"When I look to see what I am leaving then I would be silly to leave this Welsh team who I think have got more to achieve,” he said.

“It's achievable. They are good enough to do it. I don't really want to hand that over to someone.

“I think I worked hard enough to get it. I don't want to hand that over. I want to be the one again to do something we have never done and that's to go to the World Cup.”

Coleman admits that he does want to return to club management at some point but he’s not ready to move on just yet.

He added: “If Wales had said look, here it is, are you happy? And I was happy, but gone into the finals and thought, 'hang on a minute, if we do this that and the other then I am going to have an opportunity here or there' – then I would have been a huge hypocrite.

“I have said all along how important Wales is to me. To use Wales like that and the situation like that is poor really. I would never do that.

"Managers are stocks and shares. One year you are good, the next you are poor and that's how it is. It's the industry.

“At the minute we are all on a high and it's great. Maybe I could have capitalised on that.

“But I’m glad it's settled and there is no more uncertainty. I'm glad I have another two years because, let's be honest, in my first two years I was lucky to get a second two.

“But I got another crack and it went great. Now I have a chance for a third campaign. I’m really looking forward to it.”

And Coleman feels that the fact that his future is sorted will help Wales to focus on the job in hand in France.

“Our biggest strength is the togetherness within the group,” he said. “The unity is fantastic. For me not to be knowing what I am doing then it could have a knock on effect on some of the staff.

“If I am leaving then I may take some of the staff too. It's not just me.

"We have a great staff. We have a very good team of players.

“Talks went on a bit longer than I think everyone expected but the FAW showed me that they really wanted me and that was important. I’m very happy to have another campaign.”
