DANIEL Sturridge's late winner saw England leapfrog Wales to go top of Euro 2016 Group B after fellow substitute Jamie Vardy had cancelled out Gareth Bale's free-kick opener.

Here's how Chris Coleman's men rated in the 2-1 defeat to England in Lens.

Wayne Hennessey: Returned in place of Danny Ward after recovering from his back spasm and produced several good stops. No chance with Vardy’s leveller and unlucky to be unsighted for the winner. 7

Neil Taylor: With England on top throughout the left wing-back could not get forward as much as he and Wales would have liked. But the Swansea City star played his part in a valiant rear-guard action. 6

Ben Davies: None of the goal line clearance heroics that we saw against Slovakia but the Tottenham defender had another good game as Wales came under heavy pressure in the second half. 7

Ashley Williams: The skipper has looked slightly out of sorts in France so far and he won’t be happy to have headed into the path of Jamie Vardy for England’s crucial equaliser at the start of the second half. 6

James Chester: Some important interceptions in the first half in particular and generally a solid presence at the heart of the Wales defence after another excellent showing against Slovakia. 8 (star man)

Chris Gunter: The Newport-born defender had to concentrate on defence rather than attack and performed well before being nudged to the floor by Sturridge as he scored the late winner. 6

Joe Ledley: Back in the starting XI less than six weeks after breaking his leg and put in a heroic shift in central midfield before taking a knock and being replaced by David Edwards. 6

Joe Allen: Not as eye-catching as he was against Slovakia but quietly effective alongside Ledley and in a supporting role to Bale, Ramsey and Robson-Kanu. Proved once again how vital he is to Wales. 7

Aaron Ramsey: The bottle blond stood out for his work rate as much as his hair. Ran himself into the ground for the cause but couldn’t wrest the initiative from a rampant England in the second half. 7

Gareth Bale: After all the talking and boasting the Real Madrid star produced the goods with another superb free-kick but, despite his best efforts, the game slipped away from him and Wales after the break. 7

Hal Robson-Kanu: Recalled in favour of Jonny Williams to allow Bale to run at England’s suspect defence but was isolated and fed off scraps before being replaced in turn by Williams. 6
