NEWPORT County boss Warren Feeney is looking to step up his striker hunt after Lenell John-Lewis was carried off in their pre-season opener.

The Exiles drew 2-2 with Caldicot last Friday with goals from trialist forward Marlon Jackson from the penalty spot and a peach of a free-kick from Jack Compton at the death.

That leveller came just minutes after John-Lewis was helped off the field with an injury to his right knee, landing awkwardly when going up for a header.

The 27-year-old was on crutches and looks unlikely to be a member of the party that travel to Poland tomorrow for a week-long training camp that features fixtures against KS Polkowice and FC Hradec Kralove.

Feeney, who was also without forward Sean Rigg at Caldicot because of a minor calf problem, is looking to bolster his ranks up top.

The former Northern Ireland striker said: “You don’t want to get injuries and that could leave us short now. I am speaking to strikers and I might have to ask the board for an extra zero to go on that cheque!

“I want to add and get in at least another four players. It’s going to take time and I am speaking to a few clubs.

“I think I’ve got good options but you can see we are light up front. Sean Rigg has got a little bit of a tight calf but he is ahead of everyone in terms of having a shorter break (because he won promotion via the play-offs with Wimbledon).

“Ben Tozer is working very hard with the physio and will be fit for the start of the season, we will get him up to speed very quickly.”

County enjoyed a useful workout against Caldicot despite needing Compton’s late equaliser to avoid defeat to the Welsh League Division One side.

“I don’t look at pre-season results,” said Feeney. “For me it’s about getting fit and blowing off the cobwebs.

“I’ve been in teams that have won every pre-season game and then lost the first lot of league games while at Luton we lost pre-season games and were top of the league for the first four months.

“It’s about getting the players playing together. I mixed the team up so they got 45 minutes under their belt, they were a bit rusty but that’ll come with touches and more training with the ball.

“It’s about getting into the habits again of knowing where your players are on the pitch, getting into position and your touch on the ball.”

County play KS Polkowice on Wednesday and FC Hradec Kralove on Saturday.
