NEWPORT County AFC fought back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against Crewe Alexandra at Rodney Parade.

Sean Rigg's late header cancelled out an Alex Kiwomya stunner for the visitors to earn County a point. Here's what we learned.

1. First goal crucial again

In all four League Two games involving County so far this season the team scoring first has taken at least a point and so it proved again on Saturday.

The Exiles started slowly and went behind in the 16th minute – handing Crewe the early initiative and giving themselves an uphill task to get back into the game.

2. County not short of fighting spirit

Warren Feeney’s men never really got going in the first half but they looked a different side after the break, showing their desire and determination to earn a point.

They twice battled back from a goal behind against Mansfield in their first home game before losing to a sucker punch at the death but this time they refused to be beaten and they got what they deserved.

3. Exiles need a home win to tempt fans back

Several hundred supporters seem to have voted with their feet having not seen a home win at Rodney Parade since March.

The stay-away fans missed a spirited showing in the second half but only a win or two at home is likely to tempt them back through the turnstiles.

4. Jordan Green still learning his trade

Ankle injury or not, the 21-year-old cut a disconsolate figure as he walked to the dressing room after being substituted just 19 minutes into the match and his confidence will have taken a knock.

Feeney was clearly not happy with his part in Crewe’s goal and took decisive action but with Green’s loan running until January the manager says he can still be an important player for County and it’s too soon to write off the youngster.

5. Bad blood with Luton is real

Feeney and players were happy to get a first point on the board at home but the biggest smiles on display on Saturday came when they learned that Luton had lost to a 96th-minute goal.

The Hatters’ jibes following last week’s match at Kenilworth Road will not be forgotten in a hurry and the County dressing room certainly enjoyed the instant karma dished out by the football gods at Stevenage.
