NEWPORT County AFC manager Warren Feeney admitted the fans were right to boo him after a 2-1 home defeat to bottom club Cambridge United.

County were ahead after just 10 minutes as Rhys Healey marked his full debut by heading in from close range.

But after an encouraging first half display they conceded twice from Medy Elito free-kicks after the break as bottom club Cambridge claimed a first win of the season.

It meant the Exiles slipped into the League Two relegation zone – they are now above Cambridge on goal difference only – and Feeney made no excuses.

“There’s always pressure but I don't worry about it because I've been in football so long now,” he said.

“There was 2,000 people here today but I’ve played in front of 40,000 or 50,000 so I don't worry about that.

“I put pressure on myself to succeed and the fans are right to have a pop at me, but I can’t affect that.”

He added: “That’s the story of our season so far if I’m honest.

“We can’t keep giving soft goals away. The goals have both come from silly free-kicks. We can work on things all week but it’s down to the players when they cross that line, and that’s the frustrating thing.

“You are never going to dominate for 90 minutes, and there will be periods in games where they will have the play, but we were comfortable.

“But results don’t lie, we’ll wake up tomorrow and it will say 2-1 to Cambridge.”

Ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Grimsby Town Feeney insisted that he can turn things around.

“I was very frustrated but I believe in the boys, we aren't too far away but we can’t keep doing what we’re doing,” he said.

“We shouldn't have lost that game today and that’s the hardest part, we have to move on.

“We have to keep the players’ heads up, I take responsibility for everything and we have to get them going.”
