NEWPORT County AFC slipped to another late defeat at Yeovil Town on Saturday in Graham Westley’s first match in charge since taking over from Warren Feeney.

Dan Butler’s own goal in the 81st minute saw League Two’s bottom club lose for the sixth time this season.

Here are five things we learnt from the game...

1. New manager, same failings

It’s far, far too early to judge Graham Westley on the job he is doing and the new County boss needs time to work his magic on the squad.

However, Saturday’s defeat again showed that late goals remain the team’s Achilles’ heel this season, while just two attempts on target tells its own story.

Let’s hope those missing through injury will be back in contention for Plymouth.

2. Jennison Myrie-Williams’ best position is out wide

The summer signing did not have his finest day in County colours and was replaced by Jack Compton after 65 minutes.

Myrie-Williams almost played as a second striker with Marlon Jackson in the first half with Jon Parkin behind, but the role didn’t really suit him, Myrie-Williams that is.

3. Westley gives youth a chance

It might have only been for the last four minutes, or nine if you count injury time, but Finlay Wood would have been delighted to get on for his County debut.

Westley said in the week he was always prepared to give young players a chance and he stuck by his word.

4. Injuries need to clear up

If there’s one thing County don’t need in their position it’s injuries, so the sooner Reece Grego-Cox, Mark Randall, Paul Bignot, Rhys Healey, Jamie Turley and Joss Labadie all get back to fitness the better.

Marlon Jackson went off with a knock on Saturday and County will need all the firepower they have when they face Plymouth.

5. The players need to prove themselves to the fans

Nearly 450 County fans made the trip to Yeovil and nearly 450 got drenched on the away terrace watching their team.

It is clear from comments on forums and social media that some of them feel members of the current squad aren’t pulling their weight – and given the way the season has gone you couldn’t argue with them.

Surely now it is time for the players to prove to their fans that they are worthy of the County shirt.
