NEWPORT County AFC salvaged a point against Barnet after Sean Rigg’s late penalty sealed a 2-2 draw at Rodney Parade.

The Exiles had led 1-0 through Ben Tozer’s first half header but two John Akinde goals in nine minutes put the visitors on course for victory before the dramatic finale.

Here’s what we learned from the League Two clash.

1. It feels good to be the beneficiary of a late goal and a penalty

For once the Exiles were on the right end of a late goal and a controversial penalty decision. So often the boot has been on the other foot but this time there were no complaints from the home fans.

Jennison Myrie-Williams appeared to go to ground too easily to win the club’s first penalty in League Two this season. It’s no consolation to Barnet, but County will feel they deserved some luck.

2. Fans believe the Great Escape is possible

The atmosphere at Rodney Parade over the last two games has been noticeably louder and more upbeat, despite the team only gaining one point from six.

The fans have still not seen a home win since March but, judging by the standing ovation at the end last night those at the ground believe their team can get out of trouble.

3. County attack can flourish without Jon Parkin

The top scorer was ruled out with a minor injury last night and the fear was that without him there would be no goal threat.

But, while he offers a focal point and a physical presence as well as an eye for goal, his absence allowed Rhys Healey and Reece Grego-Cox to shine up front and their pace and clever movement caused Barnet problems.

4. James Bittner will be glad to get back to coaching duties

The veteran goalkeeping coach will have enjoyed his first start since November last year – for the most part.

He dealt with everything Barnet threw at him until he was beaten by John Akinde twice in nine minutes – the second from distance. But he’ll be happy to hand the gloves back to number one Joe Day on Saturday.

5. Mark Randall does not look happy

There appeared to be an issue between Randall and Graham Westley when the midfielder was substituted following Barnet’s first goal.

His fifth yellow card of the season means he will miss Saturday’s trip to Accrington Stanley anyway but Westley needs to get one of his most talented players performing on a regular basis.
