NEWPORT County AFC are off the bottom of League Two and out of the relegation zone after Saturday’s stunning 3-0 win at Notts County but manager Graham Westley warned his players that they’ve achieved nothing yet.

Goals from Sean Rigg, Rhys Healey and Josh Sheehan sealed a comfortable victory over John Sheridan’s side at Meadow Lane.

The Exiles have now won four successive matches and are unbeaten in seven in all competitions.

Three straight league wins for the first time since January 2015 means they are up to 22nd in the table but Westley wants more from his side.

“We’ve improved performance, we know that,” said the Exiles boss.

“Now we need to show our strength of character by making sure that improved performance leads to more, that we don’t rest on our laurels and start thinking that we’ve achieved something.

“We’ve taken an important step in leaving the bottom two behind and we now need to build on that and make sure that we keep progressing forwards.

“Football’s a funny old thing; you can’t forecast from one week to the next what’s going to happen.

“You’ve just got to keep your discipline right, keep your preparation right and make sure you’re ready to go again.”

Westley’s side host 10th-placed Wycombe Wanderers at Rodney Parade on Tuesday before travelling to seventh-placed Blackpool next Saturday.

“We like to get into the frame of mind that says we believe we can win on Tuesday night,” he added.

“I think that’s the key thing – to make sure we prepare ourselves right and going into the game we’re confident that we can win.

“We’ll enjoy the result because there’s no point being in football if you can’t enjoy a good win.

“We’ll enjoy the result but enjoy it in the right way and enjoy it with preparation on top of your agenda because it won’t be an easy game on Tuesday night.

“We’ll have a lot of work to do between now and then to go into that game ready to win it.”

Pleased though he is to be out of the drop zone, Westley doesn’t want his side to be ‘defined’ by their league position.

“Of course you look at league tables and of course you want to progress up the table but you’ve got to make sure that the league table doesn’t define you,” he said.

“I haven’t inherited a bottom-of-the-table group of players, I’ve inherited a tremendous group of players.

“There’s fantastic quality, fantastic appetite, their work-rate is sensational, they’re a joy to work with and the key thing is not to define yourself by the league table – you define yourself by your work-rate, by your care and your passion for the result.”
