THE Newport County AFC revival was halted by an 88th-minute winner from Wycombe Wanderers defender Sido Jombati to send the Exiles back to the bottom of League Two. Here's what we learned...

1. A reality check or merely a setback?

Some will see this result and the fact that County are back to the bottom of League Two as evidence that Graham Westley and his team, as well as the fans and us in the media, were getting a little ahead of themselves in talking about targeting the top seven.

But anyone who watched the match will know that the Exiles were desperately unlucky to come away with nothing from a match they never looked in danger of losing. It was a display that shouldn’t derail the progress made over the past month.

2. Different approach needed at home

Westley admitted afterwards that he may need to pick a different team with different strengths to play on what is likely to be a difficult pitch at Rodney Parade over the winter months.

The ball was in the air for a fair amount of the time on Tuesday night and County should certainly find it easier to replicate their performance at Notts County when they go to Blackpool on Saturday and Plymouth Argyle seven days later in the FA Cup.

South Wales Argus:

3. Best is yet to come from Jack Jebb and Josh O’Hanlon

The two new signings have made a positive impression early on in their County careers with O’Hanlon (above) particularly impressive against Carlisle United and Jebb highly impressive on his debut against AFC Wimbledon.

But the pair have only shown flashes of what they can do since then and both were substituted last night – demonstrating that they are still not quite up to full fitness and ready to contribute as much as they and the manager would want.

4. More attacking options needed from the bench

Westley says the only players who can help the team win a match are the ones that are available to him and it’s remarkable that the Exiles went seven unbeaten without up to nine players.

But after four straight wins the lack of attacking options on the bench proved decisive last night. Jennison Myrie-Williams probably should have been awarded a penalty after he came on but what Westley would have given for the likes of Jon Parkin, Reece Grego-Cox or Jordan Green – who ran Alfreton Town ragged as a late sub last week.

5. The Rodney Parade ground staff deserve great credit

The pictures that were doing the rounds on social media before the match showed Rodney Parade to be swamped by surface water on Monday night and Tuesday morning and the fixture was clearly close to be postponed.

Some County fans will be wishing they hadn’t bothered but the ground staff deserve all the plaudits they get for pulling off a minor miracle. And the hard work will continue over the coming months – good luck guys!
