NEWPORT County AFC striker Aaron Williams insists Exiles fans are in for a ‘very exciting’ second half to the season, writes James Stevens.

The former Peterborough United man has started both games since being reunited with former boss Graham Westley.

And, despite suffering defeats at Wycombe Wanderers and Stevenage, he’s seen enough to convince him that the side can get on a roll and start climbing the table.

“I think once we’ve won a game then things will get better and some of the new faces will show their character and show what they can do for the team,” said the 23-year-old.

“This half of the season is a very exciting one for the fans and the players.”

Williams is confident that Westley is the right man to lead County to safety.

The Exiles’ boss signed Williams from non-league Nuneaton Town when he was in charge at Peterborough and he scored two goals in 10 games in two years at London Road.

“I think having a gaffer like we have is going to help us a lot, and the coaching side is really good too,” said Williams.

“As for the players, everyone is giving everything to keep improving their fitness, everyone knows we have got the capability to get a win and go high up in this league.

“Anyone in this team could step up to League One and play well there. I’ve got confidence in every single player who puts the shirt on to go and do a job out there and get us out of this bad patch.”

County have lost all of their last eight league games, yet the man who scored 38 goals in just one season is optimistic about the chances of League Two’s bottom side.

“I think we’ve got a good squad but that’s up to the gaffer to decide, and he’ll want to build this team round the players he wants in the squad,” said Williams.

“I think the only thing the team is missing is a win and I think once we get the losing feel after the game out of us and get the winning feel back, we will get all of the incentive to keep going and keep going!”
