NEWPORT County AFC caretaker boss Michael Flynn has described as “unbelievable” and “surreal” the moment he received a show of support from legendary striker Thierry Henry.

Flynn hadn’t long returned home after the Exiles’ superb 1-0 win at Morecambe on Tuesday night when the World Cup winner sent him a congratulatory text.

Henry, Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer who is now an assistant to Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, also offered Flynn his help should he ever need it.

In his reply, Flynn, in charge of County until the end of the season, even made a playful enquiry as to the Frenchman’s availability for the League Two run-in.

Flynn and Henry have been working towards their coaching badges with the Football Association of Wales at Dragon Park, a stone's throw from County's Spytty Park training base.

The Exiles, who have won their last two fixtures, host Blackpool tomorrow (kick-off 3pm) still seven points away from safety.

“I woke up on Wednesday morning to a text off Thierry which was surreal,” said Flynn.

“He said he was really pleased for me, what a great result it was, and if I need anything just to ask because he’s always there for advice.

“It was unbelievable and something that definitely made me smile a bit more when I had my little boy smacking me round the head at 6.30am after getting in at 4am.

“The text message definitely put a smile on my face.”

Flynn added: “Thierry’s one of my heroes in the game, he’s just pure class, and he’s like that off the pitch as well.

“I’ve been fortunate to learn off people like him, Patrick Vieira, David Ginola and Sol Campbell.

“And then you’ve got people like Kenny Brown, who used to be my manager, and Rob Edwards, who is a very good coach at Wolves.

“It’s a great mix of people trying to better themselves. It’s all put together by Osian (Roberts, Wales assistant) and Lennie Lawrence, and something that is attracting big names and the right calibre of coaches.

“There are people like Pep Linders, a first-team coach at Liverpool, the club I supported as a kid.

“It is surreal. Getting with these people, picking their brains and seeing how they work, and for me it’s invaluable.”

As for the possibility of getting Henry, who retired from playing in December 2014, in a County shirt, Flynn said: “That was my reply, I said ‘can you put your boots back on?’ “In the same sentence I asked if it was okay to call him in the week.

“He texted back ‘yes’ and then must have realised what he had put then straight away sent another text back saying yes to the call in the week.

“He’s doing tremendously in his coaching with Belgium and his punditry work.

“The supporters have been through enough, I’m not getting their hopes up that Thierry Henry is coming to play and up with Terry Henry.”
