NEWPORT County AFC have been heavily linked with a move for Hartlepool United striker Padraig Amond tonight.

Michael Flynn’s men earned a first win of the season in League Two with a 1-0 victory at Coventry City thanks to Reece Cole’s goal.

But the Exiles boss could be about to add to his strikeforce again, according to the Hartlepool Mail.

The newspaper reports that County are in talks to land Pools front man Amond after the Irishman refused to travel to Bromley today.

The Mail report claims Amond has almost certainly played his last game for the club after telling manager Craig Harrison that he would be unavailable for selection, prior to the team's trip down south.

Without the Amond the team that went down in the Exiles’ place last season were beaten 2-0 by their National League rivals.

And manager Harrison admits he was disappointed by the player's approach.

"Podge (Amond) came to me on Friday morning, before we travelled down for the game, and made it clear he was not in the right frame of mind to be involved," Harrison told the Hartlepool Mail.

"So he made himself unavailable for selection or to travel.

"We need to talk about it and look at it. We need to communicate over the next few days and work out exactly where we are."

Amond has made no secret of his desire to leave Pools this summer but no financial agreement has yet been reached, reports the Mail.

Hartlepool are believed to have turned down a transfer request from the player a month ago, in the hope of hanging on to last season's top-scorer.

The Argus has contacted County for a comment.

South Wales Argus:

Amond scored against the Exiles in both matches between the sides last season - a header in the 2-2 draw at Victoria Park 12 months ago (above) and a late consolation in Pools' 3-1 defeat at Rodney Parade in January.

The 29-year-old hit 14 goals in 49 games for Hartlepool last season and 37 in 50 appearances as Grimsby Town won promotion to League Two in the 2015-2016 campaign.
