NEWPORT County skipper Ian Hillier who broke his leg in three places following an horrendous accident this month has been sacked by the club.

The former Tottenham and Luton Town defender, who was injured cutting down trees while working as a tree surgeon’s assistant, was informed by letter yesterday his contract is terminated.

County told Hillier he has ten days to appeal the decision and he has confirmed to the Argus he will do so having already consulted the Professional Footballers’ Association.

The Exiles are confident they are on sound legal ground having consulted club secretary and solicitor John Allison, while chairman Chris Blight has confirmed the club will accept any decision made in appeal, with FIFA and the Football Association of Wales both set to deliberate.

Mr Allison said: “As Ian has disclosed to you, we wrote to Ian to inform him of the decision following a board meeting.

“He sustained his injuries in a capacity where he wasn’t representing the club and is now unable to perform his duties for the club.

“In the past we have continued to pay injured players, but this case is different.”

Blight said: “Ian was a respected captain and player of Newport County AFC and was injured in the course of his day job.

“It means he can’t play an active role for the club and after considerable consideration we have come to this decision, but it certainly wasn’t taken lightly.”

The PFA confirmed to the Argus that Hillier has been in touch.

An FAW spokeswoman said: “We are aware of this situation, but can’t make any further comment at this time.”

A distraught Hillier admitted to the Argus he feels hugely let down by the club: “I received the letter yesterday and I am already appealing the decision. I can’t go into the specifics, but I feel I have grounds to appeal.

“The letter explained that the decision was because I didn’t get injured performing for the club and now can’t fulfil my obligations.

“I feel really hurt and let down, I have had no offers of reduced wages or anything like that, the chairman visited me at home which I thought was great, but he made it clear he couldn’t make me any promises when I asked if the club would stand by me.

“The gaffer (Dean Holdsworth) says he can get me into Lilleshall for my rehabilitation (Holdsworth is a former players’ chairman of the PFA) which is great, but I’ve got a family to support and it doesn’t put food on the table. I feel really gutted, I love the club and the supporters have always been brilliant with me.

"I had plenty of interest in the summer from other clubs, but I wanted to stay here and help the club into the Conference.

“I don’t harbour ill feeling towards the manager, because his priority is to look after the team, I don’t believe this was his decision.

“Finally I want to thank the fans. They’ve been brilliant with me and it saddens me to know I won’t play in front of them again.”

Manager Dean Holdsworth said: “I have been in touch with Ian and I will support him in any way I can, I am very sad it has come to this and he knows I will support him any way I can.”

Meanwhile, the Tiverton Town website was last night reporting that County striker Phil Walsh has signed a three-month loan deal with the club.

Absolutley shocking... what i disgrace. Whoever is responsible for this should be ashamed of themselves. The soap opera that is Newcastle United just got renamed to Newport County.

Had he broken his leg playing for County I would agree, but wouldn't it be classed mis-management of funds to keep paying him? Is it any different to him breaking his leg ski-ing? Would you expect him to be paid then?
It's a horrible action to take, but is there really any other choice?

The decision may well be legally correct but it has been badly handled and this may have affected the other players.

I think that the club should have looked for ways of giving support to Ian Hillier to help him financially even though his contract was terminated. The simplest way would be to organise a collection amongst suppporters. About a thousand people could easily raise a useful sum without leaving themselves short.

Ah, but don't forget, where there is blame, there is a claim.....

Oh come on, the guy was captain of Newport County and therefore reasonably well paid, on top of that, he had other employment, so I daren't say he was skint.

He is not going to be out of pocket, as someone will be to blame, so someone is going to get sued.

Why should the supporters have a collection? It wasn't our fault.

i know a club who have teams in gwent county and east gwent league, and they have insurance to pay their players. surely a team in the bss would have such a policy? if not then you have to ask why. there are ways around this, and sacking the skipper surely wasnt one of them.

Insurance in case they break their legs playing for them maybe, but I wouldn't have thought it the other way around.

Actually the team in questions policy covers all aspects of injuries. i know this because i was a beneficiary of the policy at the start of last season.

How low can the County sink – and I don’t only mean in the league!
Never mind the board claiming it’s perfectly legal what they’ve done, what about morals here? Any decent club would want to do everything they could to help a stricken player, not dump him at the first opportunity. The board want loyalty from their players and from the fans, but I’ve got news for them, LOYALTY CUTS BOTH WAYS.
Blight, you and the other little men on the board ought to be ashamed of yourselves.
This has sickened me.
Fans should boycott the next home game in protest. I won’t be there.

It's probably on par with cardiff's dreadful conduct over the 'sacking' of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank.

I'm sure it must have been obvious to the County board that this would be a PR disaster and so I presume it really must have been a last resort. A team of Newport's size surely can't afford to keep paying a player who has suffered a long term injury while NOT PLAYING FOR THE TEAM. In an ideal world they would keep paying him but I didn't spot Mr Blight on Britain's most wealthy list this year (especially as he is no longer an estate agent) and so I doubt he can dip into Abramovich sized funds.

I don't think the board have any public relations awareness at all, judging by previous 'take it or leave it' decisions. I think they expect the sheep among the supporters to accept whatever they hand down.
And I'm not too sure they are fully cognisant of the legal status of sacking Hillier. How many people in everyday jobs are sacked because they are hurt outside work or fall ill? Decent employers give them sick pay for a time at least before that stops and they apply for benefit. Furthermore, I understand County actually find second jobs for their players, so I can't see that 'You weren't working for us arguement' standing up.
It is likely County will be forced to cough up, rather than pay willingly - another PR disaster.
And they're calling today for everybody to pull together. What a joke!

A YOUNG SEMI- PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER CANNOT SURVIVE ON THE WAGES PAID BY THEIR CLUB. THEY ARE FORCED TO TAKE A SECOND JOB TO PAY BILLS,PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE, TO SUPPORT THEIR YOUNG FAMILIES. A PHYSICAL JOB IS PREFERRED BY THEIR CLUBS BECAUSE IT IMPROVES FITNESS LEVELS.HISTORICALLY, THERE HAS BEEN A LINK BETWEEN THE RAILWAY JOB AND NEWPORT COUNTY PLAYERS .I UNDERSTAND A NUMBER OF PLAYERS HAVE BEEN EMPLOYED THERE SO THE CLUB IS FULLY AWARE OF THE SITUATION. AN INJURY SUSTAINED IN WORK,ESSENTIAL TO KEEP THE BAILIFFS AT BAY,CANNOT BE COMPARED WITH A SKIING INJURY- A LUXURY HOLIDAY YOUNG PLAYERS WITH FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES COULD NOT POSSIBLY CONSIDER! SURELY OTHER PLAYERS MUST NOW FEAR THEIR FUTURE WITH A CLUB LIKE COUNTY. RUTH

Are Stoke City going to sack the player who tripped over his pet dog?
Talking of Stoke, well done Newport boy Tony Pulis.
