Newport County striker Dave Gilroy is praying that the Football Association of Wales will sort his international clearance in time for him to play twice this weekend, after boss Dean Holdsworth opted to call the striker back to Spytty Park.
Weather permitting, Gilroy will start upfront today at loan club Weston-super-Mare, who just happen to be hosting Dover Athletic, who are second in the Blue Square South.
However, after Gilroy’s chance to put one over Dover, he will return to Newport County and be involved in tomorrow’s clash with Bromley, if he receives the all-important thumbs up from the FAW.
The hot-shot striker was sent to Weston to rediscover his goalscoring touch and has responded in emphatic style, scoring five goals in five games to help Weston towards mid-table in the Blue Square South.
It’s given him the confidence boost he required and now the former Bath City ace is desperate to help the Exiles on two fronts this weekend.
“I would love to be involved on Sunday, I’ve spoken to the gaffer and he’s told me he wants me back here and that’s all I needed to hear, because I believe I can make an impact for Newport,” he explained.
“Hopefully, this weekend is the perfect scenario, score a few goals and beat Dover, which helps Newport, and then maybe score a few on Sunday as well!
“I still have total confidence that I can make my mark and help County to win the title and with the games coming thick and fast over Christmas, hopefully I will get my chance to prove it to everyone.”
The Exiles have more concerns in defence than in attack for tomorrow’s clash, both Martyn Giles and Paul Cochlin have been laid low all week with suspected swine flu.
Both men are recovering well but, having not trained, are unlikely to be involved, so Alton Thelwell and Jamie Collins are likely to retain positions in the back four with academy graduate Gary Colborne providing defensive cover on the bench.
The Exiles are hoping to attract their biggest crowd of the campaign with children under 16 allowed in for free with a paying adult. “I hope it’ll be a great crowd and great performance, it should be a really excellent day for us,” Holdsworth said.
