Hats off to Welling – Holdsworth

NEWPORT County boss Dean Holdsworth was keen that visitors Welling were praised after holding the high flying Exiles to a 2-2 draw at Spytty Park on Saturday.

The Wings clipped County by retrieving a two goal deficit through Tom Whitnell, playing well enough that they might even have won it but for a great save at the death from Glyn Thompson, Jamie Collins and Kerry Morgan’s goals only earning the Exiles a point.

“My first reaction is to credit Welling, they came here and played well, passed the ball well and it’s important we recognise that.

“I am disappointed because we were 2-0 up and in that situation it’s uncharacteristic of us to switch off. But the result gives us a bit of a nudge, it’s a bit of a wake-up call and we’ll move on.

“We created enough chances to have won the game, but that happens sometimes. There was a lot of effort and endeavour, but Welling came and had a go.

“They’ve got a very good away record, have picked up of late and you can see why, they came and made it an entertaining game, but it wasn’t very professional of us not to close it out.”

Holdsworth is braced for a gruelling few weeks, the Exiles away in six of their next seven.

“We want to get back on the winning trail, it’s a tough game at Eastleigh, but wins don’t just happen, we have to dig them out.

“We should have seen the job through against Welling but we must learn from things like that.”

Holdsworth was staying as neutral as Wales’ Euro Qualifying opponents Switzerland on the subject of who scored County’s first goal, Danny Rose’ freekick possibly touched in by defender Jamie Collins.

“Jamie is claiming it, he says he touched it, I think he did, well if he says he did, I don’t know on that one,” he joked.

“The next month is going to be a bumpy ride for us, we need to look after each other and we’ll get our rewards. We’ll do the right things and move on from Saturday.”
