NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh today reveals he wants to make four more permanent signings before the close of the transfer window.

And the manager is even giving an opportunity to a former star Exile with Kerry Morgan, pictured, training with the club, who returned for pre-season yesterday.

The Exiles have around six players on trial with more to potentially follow, though Edinburgh has promised to avoid a situation like last season where more triallists than signed players were selected for friendlies.

The manager also revealed that:

* He is delighted to be away on the first day of the season, the Blue Square Bet Premier fixtures released yesterday

* He is in absolutely no rush to sign new players and will take his time

* He’s considering taking some Welsh Premier League players on a non-contract basis

He is already in talks with Cardiff City about potential loan players for next season

* He is hopeful of establishing an improved link with Swansea City and hopes to meet with new boss Michael Laudrup

* He believes value for money on players out of contract is likely to improve the closer we get to the start of the new campaign.

* He feels a unity is already building in the squad

The ex-Spurs defender explained: "I said from the day I arrived that I feel the most important part of the year for any football club is pre-season and there was a good spirit already on the first day.

"I’ve got a chance to communicate my ideas and thoughts to the players and it makes all the difference."

Edinburgh is prioritising the signing of another striker and is in talks with a Conference player but he is keeping an open mind and believes patience will be a virtue.

"There are an awful lot of good players out of contract and sometimes, in terms of their wage requirements, it can be better to wait rather than jump in with both feet," he said.

"We want the right men, not the right now men and we will look for players we feel we can trust to the job that is required."

Edinburgh is also keen to maintain links to South Wales’ Premier attractions.

"Obviously with my friendship with David Kerslake and Malky Mackay at Cardiff that link is very useful to us and I’m keen to talk to Michael Laudrup at Swansea too about improving our relations with them," he confirmed.

Edinburgh believes some Welsh-based players could also come into the reckoning.

"Clearly there is talent in the League of Wales, we’ve seen that time and again," he said.

"They are local players with everything to prove and signing some might free up some money for other additions as well.

"We are looking at six players at the moment and one of them will be familiar to the fans, Kerry Morgan."

Morgan, who left the club for now-defunct WPL side Neath last summer, could feature on Friday when County face Undy Athletic in their first friendly.

Edinburgh was very pleased with the fixture list released yesterday, admitting his delight at starting away from home.

"I have always preferred it that way, I’d much rather start away from home when all the expectation is on the other team," he said.

"Mansfield are one of the favourites for the title, they battered us 5-0 at their place last season and no-one will expect us to go there and win. But we’ll be full of confidence and then we have back-to-back home games.

"Personally speaking, I’d always prefer it that way around and I think most managers do."
