ALL Blacks legend Sir Colin Meads is coming to Newport for an "evening with event" on Friday, November 30.

Regarded by many as New Zealand’s greatest player – no mean feat – he will talk at Rodney Parade.

Sir Colin, known throughout the rugby world by his famous ‘Pinetree’ nickname, returns to the ground where the Black and Ambers enjoyed their greatest moment.

On October 30, 1963, Newport beat New Zealand 3-0 – the only team to overcome Wilson Whineray’s fifth All Blacks – thanks to Dick Uzzell’s drop goal.

Playing that day against him in front of 24,700 fans at a jam-packed Rodney Parade was Newport’s dual code legend David Watkins.

He has fond memories of the infamous enforcer Meads, who won a then record 55 caps for New Zealand between 1957 and 1971.

“It is a huge honour for Newport to be hosting an evening with the great man,” Watkins said.

“He was a hugely dedicated rugby player in my day and I recall him flooring me on one occasion in particular!

“It was also huge for Newport to beat the legendary All Blacks in ’63 and I hope that the Welsh public come out in force to welcome the great man.”

The evening will also consist of a two-course meal, a question and answer session, raffle and auction.

Proceeds go to the Velindre Cancer Centre charity.

Tables of ten are available at a cost of £400 with shared tables available at £40 per person.

There are also more than 30 VIP tickets at £65 per person.

This includes a champagne reception in an executive box with Sir Colin along with prime seating for the main event.

The evening starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available from The Events Room on 0845 108 5690.
