FORMER Newport County AFC star Regan Poole is back on Wales under-19 duty tomorrow after impressing for the under-21s during the latter stages of their Euro 2017 qualifying campaign.

Poole hopes to help Geraint Williams’ side into the Elite Round of the Under-19 European Championships.

The Welsh youngsters take on Greece in Wrexham tomorrow before also hosting England and Luxembourg over the next week in a qualifying tournament for next Spring’s Elite Round.

“It’ll be a great experience for us and I think we’ll do well,” said Poole, who left Rodney Parade for Manchester United last year.

“We’ve got a good, strong squad of players here, and we’ll be playing against England too and there’ll be some familiar faces there for us so it’s going to be an interesting few games.

“I’m really looking forward to this week, it’ll be a good test for us; I’ve played against Luxembourg for the under-21s and now I’m facing them again for the under-19s, so yeah, I know it’ll be three tough games for us.

“I think we’ll be alright, we’re really looking forward to it, the camp looks good, everyone looks happy; it’s a nice little break for us all from our clubs, and, of course, there’s nothing better than playing for your country.”

Making his debut for the Under-21s in September as a substitute against Denmark, Poole started both of the following games against Luxembourg and Armenia and gained invaluable experience ahead of the next under-21 campaign, where the 18-year-old will again be eligible for selection.

“Going up to the under-21s was a great experience for me, to play against older players,” he told FAW.Cymru website.

“But it’s great that it’s the same manager; I know all the staff here anyway because I’ve played for them before.

“Making the step to the 21s for the past few games was a massive bonus and a huge step for me in my career which I really enjoyed, but I’m really happy being back with the 19s and hopefully I can help lead the boys into the Elite Round.”

After tomorrow’s match the under-19s face England at Bangor in their second qualification game on Saturday.

Poole continued: “Our games are free entry so hopefully people will come and support us. I’m sure they will because we always get good support when we are in North Wales and I’m looking forward to the atmosphere.

“It’d be absolutely brilliant [to qualify for the Elite Round].

“There’ve been a couple of times where we haven’t quite got over the line to qualify for a tournament, but hopefully this is the start now and I really want to qualify, get to the Elite Round, and everyone else does too; we have a strong squad here and I’m pretty confident, I’m really looking forward to it.”
