Aldo De Nigris' double gave classy Mexico a deserved 2-0 victory over Wales at MetLife Stadium in New York.

Wales were always likely to be up against it without the likes of Gareth Bale and Joe Ledley and both their first choice goalkeepers and they struggled with the humidity and a lifeless pitch, failing to force a save from Mexico keeper Jesus Corona.

Monterrey striker De Nigris netted the opener in the 43rd minute as he headed home from inside the six-yard box and added a second with a chested finish a minute from time.

It could have been worse for Wales as keeper Jason Brown made a series of fine saves to deny the excellent Giovani Dos Santos, Edgar Andrade and Severo Meza.

But to Wales' credit they refused to buckle under the almost constant barrage of Mexican pressure with the likes of Brown, Joe Allen and Ashley Williams impressing in adversity.

Manager Chris Coleman could not fault the efforts of his Wales players but was disappointed that the two goals had come from crosses.

He said: "It was a tough game for us, Mexico are a super team, they play with imagination and move the ball well.

"They have quality in most areas. We suffered with the weather, it was hot for us but we expected that.

"Teams don't come much better than Mexico but we gave everything we had.

"We got into good positions where maybe we could have done better but that was down to fatigue and taking the wrong option.

"We conceded the goals two minutes before the end of the first half and two minutes before the end of the game, so fatigue definitely played a part there.

"The disappointing thing was we conceded the goals from crosses, an area we would not expect to concede from. We had worked very hard at nullifying Mexico's movement but we have been caught out twice from crosses.''
