THE Vale Council has pledged to review its portable toilet emptying frequency, following reports Barry Island visitors detected pongs as far away as the beach.

Schoolchildren and day-trippers said they experienced whiffs, not of sea air, from the 12-loo facility near Nell’s Point on Friday, July 5.

The portable toiolets have been placed at the Eastern end of the resort at a cost of £720 per week.

Vale Council works manager Colin Smith said: "The portable toilets at Barry Island have received the highest level of demand since we have had this period of hot weather. While we have not received any complaints with regard to smells from the additional toilet provision the council has arranged for this season, we are reviewing the emptying frequency of the portaloos to minimise any potential odour issues.”

He added: “The council will continue to staff, supervise and regularly clean these facilities during busy periods."
