Wales manager Coleman so impressed by Newport County
NEWPORT County AFC have been the focus of national media attention this week for their incredible start to the season and their dream week has also seen Wales boss Chris Coleman sit up and take notice.
Justin Edinburgh’s men hit four goals on their League Two debut win over Accrington Stanley on Saturday before dumping Championship club Brighton & Hove Albion out of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.
That 3-1 victory after extra-time at the Seagulls’ Amex Stadium earned lavish praise from Coleman.
“It has been brilliant following Newport this week,” said the national manager.
“They had a fantastic win against Accrington in their first game back in the League and the win at Brighton was even more impressive.
“Justin is doing a superb job. He is doing tremendously well.
“I watched them beat Aston Villa the other week, albeit a young side, but Villa have got some good young players and Newport were very impressive.”
He added: “It’s great to see Newport on the up. It’s only the first two games, I know that, but what they’ve done is carry that momentum through from last year.
“Hopefully they can carry that on and have a good season. I’m sure they will.
“I wouldn’t put pressure on Justin or Newport and say that they can win promotion because it’s only two games and things can change quickly but they’ve started in the right way.
“They’ve got that momentum and that belief and they have to keep using that.”
Coleman and his players will be preparing for next week’s friendly against the Republic of Ireland at Dragon Park, the new FAW training facility in Newport.
“The facilities are brilliant,” said Coleman. “A lot of money and hard work was put into getting this place here but it’s got to be the start of something.
“You’ve got to build on this and improve it. It’s great for Welsh football. It’s a giant step forward for us and it is a superb facility that we will use for years to come. We will be here next week when we meet up for the Ireland game.”
