NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh has taken a leaf out of Gordon Gekko’s book by declaring ‘greed is good’ as he looks to claim a second successive promotion.

Edinburgh insists that the Exiles are still performing above expectations in their first season in League Two but, like the Wall Street character played by Michael Douglas, he wants his men to be greedy and go for glory once again.

County are looking to get back to winning ways at home to Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday after defeats to Burton Albion and Northampton Town and last week’s 3-3 draw at Accrington Stanley.

They are currently eighth in the table, nine points behind leaders Scunthorpe United with a game in hand, but the Exiles boss is still aiming for the top.

“We’re at the halfway stage and we’re certainly in and around the promotion hunt,” said Edinburgh.

“If anyone had told me we’d be here at this stage I’d have taken it. But once you get into a position you become greedy and we’ve got an ambitious squad that thrives on being successful.

“It’s in touching distance and, like last year when we were chasing the title, until it becomes mathematically impossible that is what our ambition has got to be.

“I think if you settle for anything else you’re undervaluing yourself.

“We want to win every game,” he added. “That is our philosophy at this football club. Unfortunately we haven’t won as many as we would have liked over the last couple and we want to put that right.”

Key to any promotion push will be County’s home form, which has been outstanding so far this season.

Edinburgh’s men have lost just twice at Rodney Parade – to Morecambe in September and to Northampton on January 4 – and have 13 home games remaining compared to nine on the road.

“The big thing now is that the majority of our remaining games are at home so if we can continue to make Rodney Parade a fortress then we’re going to be in with a shout of the top three or the play-offs,” said Edinburgh.

“Our home record is the second best in the league and we’ve got 13 more home games to come so if we do well in them we’ll be up there, without a doubt.”

Edinburgh believes Lee Minshull’s injury time goal to grab a point at Accrington last week could turn out to be a big moment in the campaign.

“Scoring as late as we did and after being behind twice in the game it felt like a win,” he said.

“I always say if you can get anything on the road it’s an added bonus, as long as you win your home games. That is what we’ll be looking to do on Saturday.”
