STRIKER Chris Zebroski is convinced that Newport County AFC can still make the League Two play-offs and he wants to be the man to fire the Exiles into the top seven.
Still County’s top scorer with seven goals, despite being sidelined since November with a knee injury, Zebroski is determined to pick up where he left off.
And after a cameo from the bench in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Hartlepool United, which left Justin Edinburgh’s men eight points off the play-offs with three games in hand, he’s ready to start at home against former club Oxford United tonight.
“I’ve been out for three months, trained all week and had a couple of practice games but it’s always nice to get back on the pitch,” said Zebroski.
“I was blowing a bit but I got through it and thankfully there’s no reaction so far so all good and hopefully I can be involved on Tuesday as well.
“It’s against one of my old clubs as well so it would be nice to score against them.
“It’s great to be back on the pitch and I’m relishing being a part of it. It’s up to the gaffer to decide if I’m ready to start but I’d love to.”
The 27-year-old admits he has been frustrated having to watch the Exiles struggle so far in 2014 but he’s looking forward to being involved in five successive home games after the recent spate of postponements at Rodney Parade.
“This is the longest I’ve been out for in my career so it has been frustrating watching but it’s given me hunger to get back and try to help the team,” he said.
“From a selfish point of view games being called off was probably good for me because it means there are more games when I come back but it has stopped our momentum a bit.
“We’ve got five home games now and we’ve got a lot of faith that we can get three points against Oxford.
“Without a doubt we can still make the play-offs,” he added. “I’ve been in teams with much less talent than this in the past and we’ve been successful.
“We’ve got a lot of talent in this squad and great team spirit and we’re ambitious.
“I am still top scorer now Conor Washington has gone and that’s another incentive.
“I want to score and create as many goals as I can and make it impossible for the gaffer not to pick me.
“I’m paid to score goals and that’s what I want to do.”
