NEWPORT County AFC failed to take full advantage of the first of their three games in hand as they shared a goalless draw with play-off rivals Fleetwood Town.

County are now up to tenth in the League Two table, six points below seventh-placed Southend United and now with just two games in hand.

Both sides had the chances to take all three points but County battered the Cod Army in the second half and Rene Howe will have nightmares about his miss from a few yards, which was down to a big bobble on the terrible surface.

This was the fifth successive home match for the Exiles and the atmosphere could have been as flat as a pancake given the recent run of results.

But thanks to the club’s innovative £5 ticket offer Rodney Parade was buzzing throughout and the 3,700 fans were treated to an entertaining match with plenty of goalmouth action but no goals.

And that means that their side have taken just five points from 15 available in the five games at the ground previously known as Fortress Rodney Parade.

Exiles boss Justin Edinburgh opted to make just one change from Saturday’s last gasp 2-2 draw with Scunthorpe United with Tom Naylor coming in for Byron Anthony at the heart of the defence.

Ismail Yakubu took the captain’s armband from Anthony, who was rested, and the bench had a very attacking look to it with four strikers and no goalkeeper amongst the substitutes.

That positive mindset was evident in the early action as Saturday’s scorers Chris Zebroski and Lee Minshull both went close to netting again.

But the best chance of the first half fell to Fleetwood after 15 minutes when Jamille Matt, a big thorn in County’s side in the past, put Antoni Sarcevic through on goal.

But the midfielder buckled under the pressure as Exiles goalkeeper Elliott Parish rushed out and he skewed his shot wide.

That was a big let-off for the hosts and, though Naylor heading across goal at the other end, they were again fortunate not to concede three minutes before the break.

Sarcevic was again at the heart of the action but this time he got his shot on target only to be denied by a stunning Parish save, diving low to his left to scoop the ball away from goal.

Matt somehow blasted the rebound wide and County survived.

Robbie Willmott, looking to make a point against Fleetwood after his early red card in the 4-1 defeat at Highbury in November, almost created the opening goal two minutes after the restart.

Attacking at pace down the left flank his drilled cross was pushed out by Chris Maxwell in the Fleetwood goal and just evaded the on-rushing Howe, while Burge couldn’t connect properly either and the chance was gone.

After a quiet 15 minutes Edinburgh’s men picked up the slack with Burge testing Maxwell with a 25-yard thunderbolt.

Howe then missed a chance every bit as good as Sarcevic’s in the first half when Zebroski found him in the middle, although he could quite rightly blame the pitch.

The former Burton Albion striker missed the target after the ball hit a divot and flew off his shin and over the bar.

The introduction of Mike Flynn from the bench was met by a big cheer from the crowd and he made a positive impact as County stepped up the pressure.

Willmott saw a fierce free-kick tipped over by Maxwell and that led to a succession of corners but the hosts couldn’t force the ball in.

I cannot believe the above report.
The game was total dross. County were clueless just hoofing the ball up to the big 2 up front.
5 points from 5 home games is relegation material. Every point to the end of the season will be vital now.
We had one class player in Robbie who was superb again, a few tried there best without luck Burge, Jackson and Minshull but Sandell just wanted to kick the ball anywhere over both stands mainly. Took the wife and daughter for a treat thank goodness it only cost me £15.
Park football is what we saw tonight and the buck stops with the manager.

Sorry pal, but it's your match report which is utter dross - that was a decent point against a decent side.

Firstly you are not my "pal".
Beg to differ it was total dross and clueless football after Saturdays fine performance. Kick anywhere and hope tonight.
Fleetwood were average nothing special and not a patch on Scunthorpe.
Like I say the buck stops with Justin and thank god we have Robbie playing for us. Stop this talk of promotion and lets keep clear of danger.
A lot out there playing tonight are not up to this divisions standard.

I agree with Adrian, it's your match report which is utter dross. I wouldn't want to play on that pitch, spoiled the game. They were very cynical and we played the only footy on view albeit for only 15 minutes.

Harps 62 - we are top ten in League Two at the moment and we took a point against a team in the play offs last night and who've been bankrolled in recent years. Have a little think about that before writing tabloid statements like dross, park footbalI, buck stops with manager etc. I'm proud of where we are at the moment. Out of interest, were you over Spytty much back in 2007 watching the likes of Dover and Havant and Waterloo ? (Pal is a figure of speech by the way)

Stick 100% to what I think. We have had numerous reports that County need to make benefit of this terrible pitch we now have.
Robbie and Ryan were splendid playing cracking football but everyone else wanted to hoof the ball thankfully Fleetwood were just as guilty.
Rene's miss was down to the pitch but a previous shot on goal went into the Bisley!!
By the way Adrian started watching the boys in the mid fifties when we regularly applied for re election to Division 4 south every year. Think we had the record for that

Most of comments above have a tinge of accuracy about them. Game wasn't great but it wasn't dross and a point was a fair result. Play-offs or consolidation, I'm not really worried. We have plenty to build on. What concerns me more at the moment is that Pipe and Worley aren't even in our squad, Chapman can't even get on as a sub when game was crying out for 30 mins of his craft, and tactics, again, never varied.

Spot on Jiffy George. What's going on certainly Worley was needed to replace the Yak. How Chapman cannot even get on is also a mystery. That would of stopped the ball being hoofed up every opportunity
Some very weird team selections recently.

Great point last night and Saturday against two teams that will be thereabouts at the end of the season. County have come a long way in the last couple of years. We had a tremendous first half of the season but are now finding it hard trying to play football on what can only be described as a mud bath week in week. It is proving hard against visiting teams who just try to shut up shop and show a determination not to lose at all costs. County are playing at a much higher level than in previous seasons and have a lot to learn but I am sure that JE will be it right. Keep the faith - we are still in the mix if only just!

If you've been a County fan for that long, then you'll realise that this is our best team and manager in 25 years +. Criticise yes, but do it constructively (I'm frustrated by the amount of long balls we play too by the way)
