A SOLITARY strike from Chris Zebroski was enough to give Newport County AFC only their second win of 2014 against ten-man Torquay at Plainmoor. The hosts, rock bottom of the Football League, had Shamir Goodwin sent off in the first half.

But they made the Exiles fight every step of the way. Kevin Nicholson and Welshman Billy Bodin both went close with free-kicks from the edge of the area and Bodin, son of ex-Wales international Paul, also had Exiles goalkeeper Ian McLoughlin worried with a great turn and shot from wide on the left.

Goodwin’s red for an elbow on Mike Flynn ten minutes before the interval swung the contest in County’s favour, however.

Zebroski missed a good chance for his second as he dragged his effort wide just before the break. Andrew Hughes headed against the post from Robbie Willmott’s cross after the break. And the Exiles survived an almighty scramble at the death to win a vital three points.

We returned to winning ways.... I consider this win as a six-pointer. Now we are in safer waters being 9 points ahead of Northampton, second from bottom of the table.

A hard-earned win no doubt but a win that should bolt up the morale of JE's boys.

In yesterday's comment, I expressed my doubts about the new recruits. I promised to write should their performance proved otherwise, which it was. I, publicly, now congratulate Mr Edinburgh for having identified two experienced central defenders that managed not only to hold on County's defence but ended the match with a blank sheet. This, I believe, is honour to whom it is due.

Come on County, no looking back now, we can play with more relaxed minds starting from the Bury match that would help us end the season on a positive note.

Well done County lads. Ball on the ground worked well for you. Keep it up against Bury sounded good on the radio. It was my birthday today so thanks for that nice wee present. At 75 I'm supposed to be old, however I don't feel old, to be truthful I don't feel anything until 12 then it's time for my nap. My daughter complains that the candles cost more than the cake. As a good Welshman I'm still chasing women, but only downhill now.

Happy Birthday Larneman I'm sure you have many more years chasing women (downhill) and supporting County (downhill ?) left in you yet. How about the play-offs ? Anyone take the bait ? Anyway impossible to state how valuable was today's win...we can all rest more easily tonight !!

He's a Welshman in Ireland, but hey,
He can still hear his team as they play,
So tonight then I think,
He deserves a big drink,
Coz it's his and The County's big day !

This fantastic

Flattery will get you everywhere Jetspotter. I'm confident County can stay up, though we all needed that win to keep our spirits up. Imagine over 800 away supporters, isn't that something ?

PHEW finally a good bit of fortune for county.

a game that had to be won , and was won, quite convincingly , as a team effort where everyone had a good match .

i had suggested on a previous post that maybe it was time to take the radical decision to drop WORLEY, BURGE, AND PORTER to the bench , and maybe bring in an emergency loan defender and reinstate NAYLOR to the backline

this edinburgh did, he also reinstated my suggested midfield duo of CHAPMAN AND MINSHULL

and reinstated the experienced MIKE FLYNN.

EDINBURGH got the personnel, formation and tactics all correct today, and pat on the back for that .

his knowledge and contacts in the transfer market led to the inspired double capture of DARCY BLAKE and FEELY, both started the match and both steadied a
dodgy back four.

special mention must go to MIKE FLYNN who along with CHAPMAN commanded the midfield area. EVEN knowing he would be discarded at the end of the season
he still put in a captains perfomrance to control the midfield. you cannot buy EXPERIENCE like this and i would serioulsly urge EDINBURGH to show his
traits as a GREAT MANAGER but reconsidering MIKE FLYNN'S postiiton.

DANNY CROW gets better by the game and his behind the scenes contribution are invaluable . his assist with the goal was inspired.

now 9 points ahead of northampton , county now have a bit of breathing space and with home games against BURY AND PORTSMOUTH to come in the next week can i suggest to JUSTIN that resists the urge to "ROTATE" the team
and keep faith with the team that won today, and maybe just maybe by next saturday the talk of relegation will be ended.

im quick to be critical when things are not going well but equally quick to heap praise when some logical decisions have been made ....... WELL DONE JUSTIN INSPIRED. !

Ah!! County mad one swallow does not make a summer, I still don't think Crow merits a place in the team when we have the likes of Jeffers on the bench and cannot get a start, the guy needs a chance, because we all know what Crow can do ( not a lot ).

agree with ebbw,i was at the game and couldnt see how he was getting better despite his assist for the goal.jolley left on the bench a bit puzzling too despite his lack of goals.great to see so many fellow fans there too,U.T.C.
