NEWPORT County AFC star Robbie Willmott says he and his teammates need to produce another battling display against Plymouth Argyle tomorrow night to prove a point to their critics.

Willmott was delighted with Saturday’s hard-earned point at promotion-chasing Chesterfield but he knows that the Exiles need to put on a show for their home fans.

County have not won at Rodney Parade since they edged past Oxford United on February 18 and have drawn four and lost four at home since then.

“To sneak a late equaliser just means so much to the boys,” said Willmott after Max Porter’s late strike to snatch a point against the Spireites.

“I can’t tell you how good it feels, it feels like we won.

“Hopefully the goal kicks us on now for the remainder of the campaign and we can continue to move up that table.

“We know there are a lot of players with a point to prove,” added Willmott, who is under contract for next season.

“We are a club on the up, people are playing for their futures and I want to stay here and better myself and the other boys feel the same.

“We all need to show the gaffer and the fans what we can do. We won’t set targets, the games are coming thick and fast and we will just deal with them as we can.”

Willmott believes that the fighting spirit the team showed at the Proact Stadium on Saturday should stand them in good stead between now and the end of the season.

“It is a big, big result, a great point,” he said. “We knew we’d have to sit off and have a lot of the game where they’d have the ball and we’d be defending and working hard for each other.

“We had to be very compact, we were really organised before the break and worthy of going in level and then they scored the goal straight after half time, which hurt us.

“They had some chances after that as well but, with the football they play, you’d expect that.

“We had to re-group and go back to basics and we did that.

“We rolled our sleeves up and showed our character and I think a lot of people would say we deserved something out of it.”

Wales international Darcy Blake is available for tomorrow night’s match after completing his one-game ban for his red card against Portsmouth.

And Exiles’ number one Lenny Pidgeley could also be in contention after recovering from an ankle injury picked up at Southend United in January.
