YOUR South Wales Argus player of the year Chris Zebroski is ready to commit his future to Newport County AFC.

The 27-year-old striker topped our readers’ poll after finishing his first season with the club as top scorer.

Zebroski netted 13 goals despite being sidelined with a dislocated kneecap and associated ligament damage between November 9 and February 15.

He was presented with the Argus player of the year trophy following Saturday’s victory over promotion-winners Rochdale, which saw the Exiles end their League Two campaign on a high.

And he revealed that he’s already in talks about a new contract and says that he wants to stay at Rodney Parade if the deal is right.

“It’s good to know that the fans have voted for me,” said Zebroski. “Obviously they’ve seen something in my performances.

“I think they appreciate that I always give 100 per cent and I’ve got a few goals as well, which always helps.

“I really appreciate their support and the award means a lot.

“I think I’ve done pretty well,” he added. “It’s a good goal ratio and it could have been better if I hadn’t got the injury.

“The gaffer took a gamble on me and hopefully I’ve repaid him this season.

“Hopefully I’ll be here next season. We’re negotiating at the moment but I’d like to stay if we can get the deal right because I want a bit of stability in my career.”

Bristol Rovers and Torquay – two of Zebroski’s many former clubs – have been relegated from League Two and the front man argues that County have done well to avoid a similar fate after a difficult post-Christmas period.

“I think it’s been a good season,” he said. “We started really well and only lost one at home before Christmas so we had a bit of momentum and great team spirit and we surprised a lot of people.

“Obviously we then had all the games postponed, lost momentum and struggled a bit but I think we’ve done well not to get sucked into the relegation dogfight.

“Two of my old clubs have gone down and we’re happy not to have been fighting down there.”

And Zebroski says the 2-1 win over third-placed Rochdale offers hope for next season.

“We were pleased to get revenge over Rochdale because they gave us the runaround up there earlier in the season,” he said.

“We wanted to spoil their party because we didn’t want them celebrating in our manor.

“And it shows that we can compete against the best sides in this division so it bodes well for next season.”
