South Wales Argus: County to face West Ham XI County to face West Ham XI

NEWPORT County AFC have announced that they will take on a West Ham United XI in a pre-season friendly on August 2, replacing the fixture at Salisbury City.

A statement from the club reads: "Further to the uncertainty over Salisbury City FC's future and level of football they may be playing next season we have cancelled the pre-season friendly with them which was arranged for Saturday 2nd August 2014.

Newport County can confirm we will face West Ham United U21s/Development Squad in a pre-season friendly on Saturday 2nd August 2014.

"The fixture will be played at Little Heath Sports Ground, home to West Ham United Under 18s and kick off will be 3pm."

Meanwhile the Football League Attendance report for the 2013/14 season has been released, revealing the Exiles’ attendance statistics.

The report shows that just under 80,000 fans visited Rodney Parade last season.

The average attendance at Rodney Parade was 3,453 and just under 10,000 away fans came to Newport throughout the campaign.

County had the 16th highest average attendance in League Two last season and finished 62nd out of the 72 Football League clubs in the average attendance league table.

Justin Edinburgh’s men, in their first season in League Two, enjoyed bigger crowds than the likes of Coventry City, Cheltenham Town and promoted clubs Fleetwood Town and Rochdale.

The biggest crowd in League Two was 18,181 at Fratton Park, home of former Premier League club Portsmouth, followed by Plymouth Argyle on 13,442.

County's biggest gate was 5,387 against local rivals Bristol Rovers on August 17 last year.

On the road a total of 9,475 County fans followed the team away from home last season and the average for each away match was 412 County fans.

That average ranks the Exiles fans 14th in League Two and 57th in the Football League.

In terms of away fans as a percentage of average home fans County ranked fifth in League Two and 11th in the whole of the Football League.

The Amber Army made up an average of 13.6 per cent of the crowds at grounds around the country.

Top marks for trying, but really, not sure what opposition Salisbury might be,well considering the friendlies we have already confirmed if i were Salisburyi would consider that a cheek.
There must be something about playing a friendly against a team in claret and Blue and passing it off as a test against a premier league outfit.

Salisbury already kicked out of the conference could any day now get kicked out of the south, players leaving left right and centre, good chance there might not be a club left to play by the 2nd,good move by the club I say.
