NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh is likely to make changes for Saturday’s clash with red-hot Burton Albion and has urged the fans to stick with his side.

The Exiles and Burton clash on Saturday with contrasting 100 per cent records, Newport’s a losing one and Albion having won four on the spin.

County return to Rodney Parade for the first time since their opening day reverse to Wycombe and Edinburgh wants his side to build on promising displays and cut out basic defensive errors.

“As much as I think that since Wycombe our performances have been very good, certainly in the last two games, I know I can say what I like, but in this industry it is all about results and we haven’t got them,” he said.

“We haven’t achieved what we’ve strived for and more than anything now we need a result and if we continue to play as we are, I have no doubt those positive results will come.

“We are conceding poor goals; I have to say that, individual errors and players you wouldn’t expect to make them which makes things doubly frustrating.”

And Edinburgh has promised to tweak his team.

“We have worked on team shape and things of that nature, but I will be making changes, there are only so many times you can allow individual errors to take place before you make changes, otherwise the players outside the team see that poor form is being rewarded,” he said. “There will be changes on Saturday.”

Edinburgh isn’t ruling out tinkering with his squad before the transfer deadline, but feels Tuesday’s defeat at Mansfield gave Newport fans cause for optimism.

“You always have to look to better yourself, if you stand still you go backwards and we have ten or eleven days to try and make some changes to the group to make us stronger,” he said.

“But I’ve always said players have to go out first before anyone comes in, we are overloaded in one or two areas where maybe one or two could do with going out before we bring people in, in other areas.

“But as we stand here now, I have every belief this group can turn things around and using the transfer market isn’t a priority for me.

“We have to take positives from our performances; there is no point me constantly picking on the negatives, because there are enough other experts to do that.

“I have to take the positives out of what I’ve seen three games into a 46-game season and results aren’t what we want so far, not anyone connected with the football club.

“But if we replicate the performance level at Mansfield, we will win more times than not. The goal in that game speaks for itself and we can’t let that keep happening.”

Edinburgh feels his biggest critics have unrealistic expectations.

“We can only look forward, I know my successes in the past aren’t what I am going to be solely judged on,” he said. “But the old Newport only had two promotions in decades, I don’t understand the mindset of why a section of people expect us to be challenging at the top of the league.

“Yes, we started so well last season, but over the whole season we were the 14th best side and I thought that was a great achievement.

“Our aim this season is to better that and we can still do that, because we have 129 points still to play for.”

consistency consistency consistency ........ in team selection and team performance is all i ask and all the majority of supporters are after.

this is a very tough league to survive in let alone get out of .

and you dont help yourself by giving the other side a goal start every game . the manager and the players maybe be "hurting" but so are the supporters.

take a grip before the situation becomes even worse ......

We don't expect to be challenging at the top, we would be happy to finish above the bottom two or three but, with our present squad, that is not going to happen. And having a dig at us 'experts' suggests you have to have expertise above the norm to be able to see 'the positives'. I would suggest you have to be a blinkered manager not to see the many numerous negatives.

Justin needs to understand that most supporters are not concerned about challenging at the top, it is challenging at the bottom that worries the hell out of us!

Changes huh! He said that before the Mansfield game and still did not start with Jackson, one thing I do know, if Jackson does not start today then either he has had a falling out with the player or he is doing it to spite all the people on here who know best.
